SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂
President Trump announced that Nvidia will be allowed to sell its H200 AI chips to approved customers in China and other countries, with the condition that 25% of the revenue goes to the U.S. government. This policy is intended to boost American jobs and manufacturing and will also apply to other U.S. chipmakers like AMD and Intel. (Read More)
The U.S. Navy is partnering with Palantir in a $448 million effort to modernize shipbuilding and maintenance through a new AI-powered platform called “Ship OS.” This system will gather and analyze data from across shipyards to speed up construction, improve repairs, and connect suppliers through smart logistics. Early pilot programs have already shown major time savings—cutting planning from 160 hours to 10 minutes and slashing material review times from weeks to an hour. The goal is not just faster shipbuilding, but rebuilding America’s shipyard infrastructure using AI tools that give workers, suppliers, and managers real-time insights into schedules, costs, and risks. Microsoft is making its biggest investment in Asia—$17.5 billion over four years—to expand AI and cloud infrastructure in India, following a previous $3 billion commitment. A new hyperscale data center in Hyderabad will go live in 2026, making Microsoft the largest cloud provider in the country. IBM is acquiring Confluent for $11 billion to strengthen its AI and hybrid cloud offerings by adding real-time data streaming capabilities. Confluent’s platform helps businesses connect, process, and govern data across systems, which is critical for building AI-powered applications and agents. The deal is expected to boost IBM’s earnings within the first year and increase free cash flow by year two. As data volumes grow and AI becomes more integrated into everyday operations, this acquisition positions IBM to offer a more complete, end-to-end data platform to enterprise clients worldwide. THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎
This week’s diamond in the rough: Intuitive Surgical
How is Intuitive Surgical using AI? Intuitive Surgical is the company behind the da Vinci robot (above), a high-tech system that helps doctors perform surgery with more precision and control. Instead of using their hands directly, surgeons guide robotic arms using a console, allowing for smaller incisions, faster recovery times, and better outcomes for patients.
Why is Intuitive Surgical valuable? Intuitive Surgical is showing strong financial momentum, with Q3 2025 procedure volumes up 20% globally and high-margin instrument and accessory sales rising 20%. It placed 427 new da Vinci systems, expanding its installed base to over 10,700 units. Despite tariff-related margin pressure, management raised its 2025 growth forecasts, with gross margins expected around 67%. The company remains highly profitable with operating margins near 30%, and while it’s not a classic growth stock, ISRG trades 12% cheaper than a year ago, which is attractive for long-term investors who believe robotics will transform surgery.
