MIDJOURNEY’S WEBSITE OVERHAUL 👨💻
Q: Why was the website cold?
A: It left its Windows open! 🪟
What’s new? Midjourney unveiled an updated website featuring a new, unified editor interface that streamlines various AI image editing tools.
How does it work? This website overhaul includes image creation and new editing tools, all accessible within a single desktop view. This editor consolidates Midjourney’s key tools into a single view, enhancing the user experience. A standout addition is the new brush-like tool for inpainting, replacing the older square selector and lasso tools. This provides greater precision in image editing. The streamlined interface is now accessible to users with at least ten generated images on Midjourney.
Why is this significant? Midjourney is currently facing a class-action lawsuit over copyright concerns, but they continue to innovate, ensuring its users have cutting-edge tools for their creative needs. This underscores a difficult set of circumstances many AI companies find themselves in, as many face lawsuits and backlash for various reasons. The successful companies, however, are the ones who are finding ways to innovate around such concerns.
AI UNDRESSING SITES GET SUED 😳
Lawsuits are taking over the AI world. 🙃
What’s up? The San Francisco City Attorney’s office has launched a landmark lawsuit against 16 of the most frequented AI-powered “undressing” websites, which are commonly used to create non-consensual nude deepfakes.
Want the details? These platforms allow users to upload images of fully clothed individuals and digitally “undress” them using AI tools. The lawsuit targets websites that, collectively, received over 200 million visits in the first half of 2024. The complaint accuses these websites of violating state and federal laws against revenge pornography, deepfake pornography, and child pornography, as well as California’s unfair competition law. The lawsuit seeks to impose civil penalties, shut down the websites, and ban the creation of future deepfake pornography.
“This investigation has taken us to the darkest corners of the internet, and I am absolutely horrified for the women and girls who have had to endure this exploitation. This is a big, multi-faceted problem that we, as a society, need to solve as soon as possible.”
Why is this important? This lawsuit underscores efforts by governing bodies to crack down on some of the dark uses for AI. Legal efforts to crack down on the creation and use of such tools is a good start, but because the foundational technology is already available to developers and users, it will likely not stop the problem completely. It could, however, mitigate widespread public usage.
RUNWAY’S NEW MODEL CREATES VIDEOS FASTER THAN WORDS 👀
AI is headed down the runway! 🛫
What’s new? Runway ML has launched Gen-3 Alpha Turbo, its latest AI video generation model.
What does it do? Gen-3 Alpha Turbo builds on the strengths of the original model but prioritizes speed without sacrificing quality. Runway claims the new model is seven times faster and costs half as much as the previous video creation model, making AI video production more accessible across all subscription plans, including free trials.
“It now takes me longer to type a sentence than to generate a video.”
Why is this significant? Runway was one of the first GenAI video creation models to gain significant adoption by the public. Since its public launch in September 2023, the model has been used by more than 10 million people. However, it has not seen much improvement over the past year, opening the door for video creation models of all kinds to stake a place in the market. Nonetheless, this new update is significant enough to help Runway recapture some of its AI video dominance.
