OpenAI’s chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, has warned that AI systems are becoming powerful in ways humans do not fully understand yet — likening them to an “alien mind.” He says today’s reasoning models can already use computers, work with people and other AIs, help with research, and create new cybersecurity risks. But the bigger concern is recursive self-improvement, where AI helps improve AI, potentially speeding up progress even more. OpenAI is trying to monitor these systems through things like chain-of-thought tracking, which looks at how models reason through problems. But as models get smarter, that monitoring may become less reliable.

🤔 Hunter’s take: The really important point is that even the people building these systems are worried. That matters because a tool we understand badly can still become deeply woven into work, science, security, and government. The issue is not whether AI becomes “human.” It is whether it becomes powerful enough before we become wise enough.

What’s cookin’? Arm just introduced CSS for Mobile 2, a new AI-native computing platform built for the next wave of smartphones. The big idea is simple: phones are no longer just running AI features one at a time. They are being built for AI agents that can remember context, coordinate apps, run models, and act on your behalf without draining your battery. The platform includes Arm’s new C2 CPU cluster for faster on-device AI and the Mali G2-Ultra NX, Arm’s first Mali GPU with dedicated neural accelerators. That means mobile graphics can use AI to reconstruct, enhance, and generate visual detail, making games look smoother, richer, and more cinematic.
