SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂
Perplexity AI, a fast-growing AI search startup, announced a new plan to share millions in revenue with news publishers whose content helps power its AI answers. Through a $5/month subscription program called Comet Plus, the company aims to pay media outlets when their work is used to respond to user questions. This move comes amid lawsuits from major publishers like the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, accusing Perplexity of unfairly profiting from their content. (Read More)
A new Stanford study shows that the AI boom is already hitting young, entry-level workers the hardest—especially those ages 22 to 25 in jobs like software engineering and customer service. Using payroll data from millions of Americans, researchers found a 13% drop in employment for early-career workers in AI-exposed roles since late 2022, while older workers in the same jobs remained stable or even grew. The study suggests AI is replacing routine, codified tasks that younger workers tend to do, while experienced employees with tacit knowledge are more protected. Importantly, jobs where AI augments rather than automates work haven’t seen the same decline. While wages have stayed steady, the big shift appears to be fewer jobs available—not lower pay. Overall, the findings are early but consistent: the AI revolution is already reshaping the entry-level job market, and Gen Z is feeling it first. (Read More)
THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎
How is CoreWeave using AI? CoreWeave rents out powerful computer chips to companies building AI tools. Instead of buying expensive hardware, businesses can use CoreWeave’s cloud service to get access to Nvidia’s top-tier AI chips.
Why is CoreWeave valuable? CoreWeave made $1.2 billion in revenue last quarter—more than triple what it made the year before. Its stock is up around 130% this year, and it expects to grow revenue by 174% in 2025. At a $45 billion market value, it’s still much smaller than Nvidia, but it’s growing fast as a result of strong demand and limited chip supply.
