SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂

Want some seasoning? Here are the saltiest AI stories in FRY-nance from this week:

  • The U.S. Department of Defense awarded OpenAI a $200 million contract to help develop advanced AI tools for military use. OpenAI will create AI systems to improve everything from administrative tasks like healthcare for service members to strengthening cyber defenses. (Read More)

  • Sword Health, a digital health startup known for virtual physical therapy, has raised $40 million to expand into mental health with a new service called Mind. Combining AI, wearable hardware, and human therapists, Mind will offer continuous support for patients with mild depression and anxiety, allowing them to access care in real time instead of waiting for scheduled appointments. For example, if someone experiences an anxiety attack, AI can quickly flag the issue and suggest care options, which a human clinician then reviews. (Read More)

  • In an effort to catch up in the AI race, Meta has reportedly offered OpenAI employees up to $100 million signing bonuses to join its development team. None have accepted the offer yet. (Read More)

THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎

Image: Okta

Q: Why couldn’t the FBI catch the hacker?

A: He ransomware. 🏃‍♂️

This week’s diamond in the rough: Okta (OKTA)

How is Okta using AI? Okta makes cybersecurity software that controls who can access certain apps and data. It uses AI to constantly evaluate the risk level of each login by analyzing identity, location, and user behavior—even including AI agents. Recently, it launched Identity Threat Protection, a new AI-powered tool that doesn’t just check for risk when someone logs in, but keeps monitoring activity during the entire session to catch threats in real-time.

Why is Okta valuable? Okta’s business benefits from strong demand because companies can’t afford security breaches. Identity-based attacks are rising, and as AI introduces new threats, the identity security market is expected to grow 12.6% annually through 2030. Financially, its stock trades at 33 times adjusted earnings, with profits up 32% last quarter.
