OPENAI IS HIRING SOMEONE TO WORRY ABOUT AI 😬

What’s up? OpenAI is hiring its first-ever “Head of Preparedness” to focus full-time on the potential dangers of advanced AI systems.

Want more details? The new role, which pays over $500,000/yr, is designed to anticipate and reduce serious risks that could emerge as AI becomes more powerful. According to OpenAI, the Head of Preparedness will track “frontier” AI capabilities and build systems to evaluate threats, model worst-case scenarios, and put safeguards in place. These concerns include mental health harms, AI-driven cyberattacks, misuse of data, and the possibility of self-improving systems behaving unpredictably. CEO Sam Altman has described the job as “extremely stressful,” reflecting the high stakes involved as AI models grow more capable and widely used.

Why is this important? As AI tools become part of daily life, it’s getting harder to overlook the ways they can go wrong. From chatbots disseminating misinformation to systems being misused for cyberattacks, the risks are no longer abstract. Hiring someone whose job is to think about these problems shows that AI safety isn’t just a future concern—it’s a real, immediate priority.

NEW YOUTUBE USERS ARE GETTING FED “AI SLOP” 🫟

What’s up? A new study found that more than 20% of videos recommended to new YouTube users are low-quality, AI-generated “slop” designed mainly to grab attention and ad revenue.

Want more details? The research, conducted by video company Kapwing, analyzed 15,000 of YouTube’s biggest channels and tested a fresh YouTube account to see what the algorithm promotes. Many of these videos are cheaply produced using AI tools to generate strange animations, recycled storylines, or shocking visuals with little context or narrative. Because they are fast and cheap to make, creators can upload them at massive scale. YouTube’s recommendation system then acts as a testing engine, pushing whatever holds attention—regardless of quality—to more viewers, including children. This trend shows how AI and algorithms together are reshaping online content toward volume over value.

RESEARCHERS USE AI TO TRACK WOLVES IN YELLOWSTONE 🐺

What’s going on? Researchers in Yellowstone National Park are using AI to analyze wolf howls, opening a new, less invasive way to monitor and protect the park’s iconic wolf populations.

How does it work? Hidden audio recorders placed around the park continuously capture wolves’ barks, yelps, and howls throughout the year. These recordings are turned into visual sound patterns called spectrograms, which AI systems analyze to detect differences in pitch, frequency, and timing. By spotting these patterns, the technology can identify individual wolves, distinguish between packs, estimate group size, and even link specific sounds to behaviors like hunting or social bonding. This approach could reduce reliance on helicopters, dart guns, and GPS collars, which are costly, stressful for animals, and potentially dangerous for researchers.
