SALTY STORIES OF THE WEEK 🧂

Want some seasoning? Here are the saltiest AI stories in FRY-nance from this week:

  • OpenAI recently secured $6.6 billion from global investors, including Thrive Capital and Tiger Global, but the funding came with a unique stipulation: investors were asked not to back five companies deemed close competitors. According to sources, this list includes Anthropic, xAI, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), Perplexity, and Glean—firms developing large language models or AI applications. This strategic request, though not legally binding, reflects OpenAI’s ambition to protect its competitive edge. (Read More)

  • Samsung Electronics warned that its third-quarter profit would fall short of expectations, citing delays in its AI chip business and increased competition from Chinese rivals. The company estimated an operating profit of $6.78 billion, missing the $7.68 billion forecast. (Read More)

  • Super Micro Computer’s shares surged 15% after announcing it is shipping over 100,000 GPUs for AI each quarter. This shipment volume could result in billions of dollars in revenue. However, the company was nine weeks late in releasing its annual report, initially expected in August. (Read More)

THIS WEEK’S DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH 💎

Q: Why couldn’t the police locate the hacker?

A: He ransomware. 🥷

This week’s diamond in the rough: Broadcom (AVGO).

How is AI helping Broadcom? Broadcom is a leading producer of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), custom-designed chips that excel at specific tasks. Unlike general-purpose GPUs, which are widely used in AI training due to their parallel processing capabilities, ASICs offer a tailored approach, resulting in higher energy efficiency and performance. Given these task-specific advantages, experts suggest that ASICs will likely dominate AI workloads by 2030.

Want some numbers? Broadcom currently holds a commanding 55%-60% market share in the ASIC industry, which JPMorgan estimates is valued at $20-$30 billion and could grow over 20% annually. Broadcom’s AI-driven growth is accelerating, with a 43% year-over-year increase in networking revenue and a fourfold rise in Ethernet switch sales. The company expects to generate $12 billion in revenue from AI chips this fiscal year, nearly tripling last year’s figure.
