GEMINI 1.5 PRO TOPS ALL CHATBOTS 🏆

Gemini 1.5 Pro wins the gold medal of AI chatbots. 🥇

What happened? Google DeepMind’s experimental Gemini 1.5 Pro model achieved the #1 spot in the AI Chatbot Arena leaderboard, beating out Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI’s GPT-4o. Gemini 1.5 Pro is available for early use in the Google AI Studio.

“Natively multimodal, with an updated long context window of up to two million tokens—the longest of any large-scale foundation model. It achieves near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, unlocking the ability to accurately process large-scale documents, thousands of lines of code, hours of audio, video, and more.”

-Google DeepMind

What does this mean? Gemini 1.5 Pro rose to the top of the AI chatbot leaderboard without much hype. This positions Google as the new leader in the LLM space. However, because Google did not publicize this achievement as much as we might expect, this might indicate insider knowledge that we are approaching some monumental breakthroughs from major AI players.

MICROSOFT TURNS ITS BACK ON OPENAI? 😳

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?

A: Because the road had betrayed the chicken many years earlier. 🐔

What’s new? In Microsoft’s latest annual report, the company added OpenAI to its list of competitors, alongside tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta.

Why is this significant? Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI and serves as its exclusive cloud provider. For the past two years, OpenAI has been functioning as the little brother of Microsoft. However, the climate surrounding their relationship is beginning to change following OpenAI’s release of GPTSearch, which directly competes with Microsoft’s Bing search engine. The companies each say they are still on working terms despite a new wrinkle in the competitive landscape. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke to his relationship with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, stating, “One of the things I love about Sam is every day he’s calling me and saying, ‘I need more, I need more, I need more.’”

NVIDIA’S NEW CHIPS FACE DELAY 😒

Knock knock … [The rest of this joke has been delayed. Sorry for your inconvenience]. 🙃

What’s up? Nvidia has informed Microsoft and at least one other cloud provider that its Blackwell B200 AI chips will be delayed by at least three months due to a design flaw found late in the production process.

What’s the Blackwell B200? The Blackwell B200 is much faster and more energy-efficient than its predecessor, the H100. The B200 chip performs crucial machine learning tasks up to 30 times quicker while using up to 25 times less power. The B200 also includes features like confidential computing for data protection, a decompression engine for faster database queries, and a second-generation Transformer Engine for advanced AI tasks.

What now? Despite the setback, Nvidia is pushing ahead, collaborating with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company on new test runs. Production is now expected to ramp up in the second half of this year, with mass shipments delayed until the first quarter of 2025. Microsoft, Google, and Meta have already placed substantial orders worth “tens of billions of dollars” for the new chips.

“We’re looking forward to using Nvidia’s Blackwell to help train our open-source Llama models and build the next generation of Meta AI and consumer products.”

-Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Meta

What’s the significance? This delay underscores how important Nvidia is to AI development. However, this heavy reliance on Nvidia is a danger for many players like Microsoft, Meta, and Google. If Nvidia chips are delayed, it means innovation for these companies is delayed as well. As a result, many major tech companies are looking to develop their own chips to limit reliance on Nvidia.
