NVIDIA RELEASES CHEAPER, SMALLER SUPERCOMPUTER 💾

You’ve heard of “fun-sized” candy. Now, it’s time for fun-sized AI! 😁

What’s up? Nvidia has unveiled the Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit, a compact $249 computer designed to run AI applications locally.

What can it do? Small enough to fit in your hand, the Orin Nano delivers double the speed and efficiency of its predecessor at half the price, handling about 70% more computational tasks. It can execute an impressive 70 trillion operations per second while consuming just 25 watts of power. Ideal for hobbyists and developers, the Orin Nano can support robots, industrial tools, and AI applications without relying on cloud services.

Why is this significant? While the Orin Nano excels at lightweight AI tasks, it’s not meant to replace Nvidia’s high-end GPUs used for training massive AI models. However, its affordability and portability are game-changing, empowering startups and individuals to innovate without incurring hefty cloud-computing costs.

Another day means another AI Christmas present from our friends at OpenAI. 🎁

What’s new? On the 10th day of “Ship-mas,” OpenAI unveiled a new way to interact with ChatGPT: by phone.

How does it work? U.S. users can now call 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to chat with ChatGPT for up to 15 minutes per month, free of charge. For global users, the service is also accessible via WhatsApp. The phone feature runs on OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp integration uses GPT-4o mini. Interestingly, Google pioneered a similar idea in 2007 with GOOG-411, a free directory service that collected voice samples to improve its speech recognition. Unlike Google’s project, however, OpenAI emphasizes that it won’t store any user information from these calls or use the calls to train its models.

Why? This feature aims to make AI more accessible, offering a simplified version of ChatGPT through familiar communication channels. OpenAI highlights this as a “low-cost way to try out” the technology, though advanced users are encouraged to stick with the web-based app for more robust options.

“The mission of OpenAI is to make artificial general intelligence beneficial to all of humanity. Part of that is making it as accessible as possible to as many people as we can. So even though we have Pro users doing super sophisticated things on our most advanced models, we also make it possible to come to ChatGPT for free without even having an account.”

TEXAS INTRODUCES AI TRANSPORTATION INITIATIVE 🚗

Q: Why are bicycles always falling over?

A: They are two-tired. 😴

What’s up? The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has unveiled the Artificial Intelligence Strategic Plan, aimed at making Texas roads safer and improving mobility statewide.

How will this work? This ambitious initiative plans to implement a series of 230 potential AI applications to enhance transportation management over the next three years. The plan outlines AI-powered strategies to improve data quality, train employees on AI technologies, and refine policies to maximize the benefits of transportation investments and infrastructure. Some of the potential applications include leveraging AI’s data processing for traffic estimation and management as well as implementing AI-powered vision and communication for incident responses.

“These initiatives are a testament to our commitment to innovation and safety. By embracing AI and other advanced technologies, we are improving the efficiency of our operations while making Texas’ transportation system safer and more resilient.”

-Darran Anderson, TxDOT Director of Strategy and Innovation
