New Siri, nobody cares

This link leads to one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in AI recently.

What’s cookin’? Apple has finally rolled out its long-delayed AI upgrade for Siri in the iOS 27 beta, and the assistant now works much more like people always expected it to. Siri can understand natural conversations, remember past chats, search through your personal information, and help find photos, emails, texts, receipts, calendar events, screenshots, and other things stored on your iPhone. It can also answer general questions, use apps, draft emails, edit photos, identify things through the camera, and help with everyday tasks like directions, music, recipes, or splitting a bill. Apple built the new Siri using help from Google’s Gemini models, then refined the technology for Apple’s own devices and private cloud system.

🤔 Hunter’s take: The weird thing is that this is both impressive and kind of underwhelming. Siri finally feels useful, but the AI race has already moved on. Apple didn’t create a new category here. It fixed the assistant we were promised years ago.

What’s cookin’? OpenAI is accusing Apple of filing a misleading lawsuit over former Apple employees who now work at OpenAI. Apple says those employees kept or tried to use confidential Apple information after leaving the company. OpenAI says that is not what happened. According to OpenAI, Apple’s lawyers first emailed the wrong person, then falsely claimed they had spoken with OpenAI’s general counsel. OpenAI also says Apple never clearly raised these specific claims before suing five months later. One key example involves Chang Liu, a former Apple employee. Apple says he accessed confidential files after leaving, but OpenAI says Apple employees were the ones asking him for help finding old files and information.

🤔 Hunter’s take: This is bigger than one lawsuit. It shows how tense the AI race has become. Companies like Apple and OpenAI are fighting not just over products, but over the people who know how to build them. And when top talent moves between companies, the line between knowledge, talent, and protected trade secrets can get blurry fast.
