ELON MUSK SUES OPENAI AGAIN 🫵

Elon Musk doesn’t just want OpenAI’s money. He wants its soul. 👁️

What’s up? Elon Musk has filed a fourth lawsuit against OpenAI, this time for anticompetitive behavior.

What are the charges? TechCrunch has nicely outlined the charges as follows:

  1. Discouraging investors from backing OpenAI rivals like Musk’s own AI company, xAI.

  2. Benefitting from “wrongfully obtained competitively sensitive information” through OpenAI’s connections with Microsoft.

  3. Converting OpenAI’s governance structure to a for-profit and “transferring any material assets, including intellectual property owned, held, or controlled by OpenAI, Inc., its subsidiaries, or affiliates.”

  4. Causing OpenAI to do business with organizations in which any defendant has a “material financial interest.”

“No objective observer can look at OpenAI today and say it bears any resemblance whatsoever to what it promised to be.”

-Attorney representing Elon Musk

How has OpenAI responded? OpenAI sees these claims from Musk as “blusterous” and “baseless.” An OpenAI spokesperson said, “Elon’s fourth attempt, which again recycles the same baseless complaints, continues to be utterly without merit.” Recently, however, the company has announced a 180 degree shift away from their initial non-profit vision towards a for-profit restructuring, raising concerns from the public about the aims of the company. The company has also faced intense internal backlash, with employees citing safety concerns and investors leaking that they have been asked by the company not to invest in rival startups. So maybe Musk is onto something, after all. Let the saga continue.

AMAZON WILL USE AI TO CAPTURE CARBON 💨

Image made with Grok (does not depict an actual city)

Training a single AI model can emit over 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. 😷

What’s up? AWS is partnering with Orbital Materials to turn its energy-hungry data centers into carbon capturing machines.

How will this work? Data centers, which power advanced AI models, require immense energy and cooling, producing significant heat and harmful emissions. Through this new collaboration, AWS plans to use a new AI-designed chemical material that can separate carbon dioxide from hot air exhaust generated by its data centers. The process involves using advanced sorbents—materials optimized with AI—to absorb carbon dioxide from the hot air expelled by cooling systems. The captured carbon could then be stored underground or turned into solid materials like cement. Orbital Materials’ CEO Jonathan Godwin stated that this new technology could allow AWS to capture more carbon than is consumed by fossil fuels, potentially achieving a net negative climate impact. If successful, this innovation could set a precedent for sustainable AI infrastructure globally.

INTEL CEO STEPS DOWN AMID AI STRUGGLES 🙃

We’ve got the latest intel on Intel. 😁

What happened? Pat Gelsinger, Intel’s CEO since 2021 and a veteran of over 30 years at the company, has stepped down amid struggles to adapt to the AI revolution.

What went wrong? Intel has long been a powerhouse in the computing space, but with the advent of modern AI, it has fallen drastically behind rivals like Nvidia. Nvidia has excelled at creating advanced GPUs built for complex tasks associated with AI. Meanwhile, Intel has kept its focus on CPUs designed for simpler tasks, which has left it struggling to keep up. During Pat Gelsinger’s time as CEO, Intel tried to turn things around with a major restructuring, but its value dropped 61% as Nvidia’s soared by over 800%. Now, Intel faces a critical moment to adapt and stay relevant in a fast-changing tech world.
