LLAMA 3 TO POWER META AI 🤖

I wonder what Instagram employees do to kill time at work. 🙃

What’s up? Meta has recently launched the early versions of its latest large language model, Llama 3, which might prove to be the most advanced model yet.

Want the details? Meta claims Llama 3 already outperforms competitors such as Google’s Gemini and Mistral AI in reasoning, coding, and creative writing. The updated model is set to power Meta AI, the company’s virtual assistant which has been integrated across all of Meta’s social platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, as well as on a new standalone website. This aligns with Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of “building general intelligence, open sourcing it responsibly, and making it available and useful to everyone in all of our daily lives.” Zuckerberg cited Meta AI powered by the new Llama 3 as “the most intelligent AI assistant that you can freely use.”

“The goal eventually is to help take things off your plate, just help make your life easier, whether it’s interacting with businesses, whether it’s writing something, or whether it’s planning a trip.”

-Chris Cox, Meta Chief Product Officer

U.S. MILITARY TESTS AI PILOT VS. HUMAN 🛩️

I threw my phone off my roof and it broke … so much for “airplane mode.” ✈️

What’s up? The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) publicly revealed that an AI-controlled jet successfully competed against a human pilot during an in-air dogfight test in September, 2023.

How did the AI pilot perform? Both aircrafts in the dogfight showcased high-speed maneuvers and engaged in close encounters. The AI-controlled jet and human-flown jet got as close as 2,000 feet at 1,200 miles per hour. DARPA doesn’t say which aircraft won the competition, however.

What’s the significance? The agency has reportedly carried out 21 test flights so far and plans to continue testing through 2024. DARPA’s chief test pilot, Bill Gray, noted that these tests are “crucial for understanding how autonomous AI systems can handle various tasks.” This testing aligns with the Pentagon’s exploration of AI systems to enhance its defense and drone fleet.

THE FIRST-EVER COFFEE BLEND DEVELOPED BY AI ☕️

Image: Kaffa Roastery

Despite my massive consumption of coffee, Finland has the highest coffee consumption per capita worldwide. The United States, in fact, is not even in the top 10! 🤯

What’s the scoop? Kaffa Roastery, a Finland-based coffee roastery, has launched the first-ever coffee blend developed by AI.

“Leveraging models akin to ChatGPT and Copilot, the AI was tasked with crafting a blend that would ideally suit coffee enthusiasts’ tastes, pushing the boundaries of conventional flavor combinations.”

-Svante Hampf, Founder of Kaffa Roastery

How was it made? Kaffa collaborated with local AI consultancy Elev to create the blend, called “AI-conic.” Founder Svante Hampf said, “We basically gave descriptions of all our coffee types and their flavors to AI and instructed it to create a new exciting blend.” The model made a blend which combines beans from Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. The dominant flavor comes from Brazil’s velvety Fazenda Pinhal, which gives it “a well balanced blend of sweetness and ripe fruit.” Hampf said he was surprised that the AI “somewhat weirdly” chose to make the blend out of four different type of coffee beans, rather than the usual two or three which allows distinction in taste between flavors from different origins. Nevertheless, the company’s taste experts agreed that the blend was perfect and needed no human modification.
