Meta: the new "Open"AI?

This link leads to one of the most interesting things I’ve seen in AI recently.

What’s cookin’? Meta says it will open source Muse Spark 1.2, its most powerful AI model yet, meaning developers will be able to download and use the model’s “weights,” or the internal settings that shape how it works. The model is built especially for coding and can help with complex software projects, debugging, planning, and long-running developer tasks. Meta is also launching Muse Glimmer, a new family of smaller open-source models designed to run directly on laptops. The move puts Meta in sharper competition with closed AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic.

🤔 Hunter’s take: For the longest time, Meta kind of sucked at AI. It had the money, the data, and the talent, but it never felt like the company was leading the conversation. Now that may be changing. By open-sourcing powerful models and making smaller ones that can run on laptops, Meta is taking a very different path from OpenAI and Anthropic. Instead of keeping AI secrets locked behind company walls, it’s betting that letting more people build with it will help Meta catch up faster.

What’s cookin’? Researchers have built an AI tool called XtalPaint that can fill in missing atoms in crystal structures, especially hydrogen atoms that X-ray scans often fail to detect. The system borrows from “inpainting,” the same kind of AI technique used to repair missing parts of images. But instead of guessing a hidden piece of a photo, it looks at the known atoms in a crystal and predicts where the missing ones should go. In tests, it restored known hydrogen positions 87% of the time and found even more stable arrangements another 10% of the time.

🤔 Hunter’s take: A lot of promising materials are basically stuck in limbo. Scientists may know most of a crystal’s structure, but if key atoms are missing, they can’t reliably simulate how it behaves. XtalPaint could unlock old database entries for batteries, hydrogen storage, superconductors, and more.
