META CRACKS DOWN ON AI FOR TEENS 👊
What’s new? Meta is rolling out new parental supervision tools that give parents more control over how their teens interact with AI characters on its platforms, starting with Instagram.
How will this work? Parents will soon be able to turn off one-on-one chats between their teens and AI characters, block specific AIs, and view summaries of the topics their teens discuss with AI assistants. These controls build on existing Teen Account protections, which automatically apply age-appropriate filters and PG-13 content guidelines. Meta also uses AI to detect suspected teen users—even if they claim to be adults—and place them under these safeguards.
Why does this matter? These updates aim to balance opportunity with safety. Parents gain greater transparency and peace of mind, while teens can explore AI tools for learning, creativity, and connection within carefully designed guardrails.
MIAMI POLICE DEBUT AUTONOMOUS PATROL VEHICLE 🚔
What’s up? Miami is putting AI on patrol, debuting the nation’s first AI-powered police cruiser known as Police Unmanned Ground or “PUG.”
Want the details? The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) unveiled the PUG vehicle last week, calling it a “gamechanger” for law enforcement. While capable of driving autonomously, PUG will initially have a deputy onboard. The high-tech car features 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, license plate readers, and audio sensors to detect suspicious activity. It can also deploy a drone for live aerial footage during emergencies. The project was developed with support from a policing technology lab and is the only vehicle of its kind currently operating in the U.S. Officials say PUG could enhance situational awareness, reduce risk to officers, and improve response times.
“It’s a way that we can touch our community in a way that we really have never done before, and we are setting the standard for what will be the future of law enforcement for this country.”
NEW YORK STATE BANS AI-FIXED RENT PRICING 🏠
What happened? New York has passed a law banning landlords from using algorithmic software to set rental prices. This is the first statewide prohibition of its kind in the U.S.
Want the details? The new law targets companies like RealPage, which provide pricing algorithms that analyze data across properties to recommend rent levels and lease terms. While these tools are marketed as ways to “optimize” profits, investigations suggest they effectively allow landlords to coordinate prices and reduce competition, pushing rents higher. Under the new rules, landlords who use such software will be considered to be colluding, even if they claim ignorance of the practice.
