META’S NUCLEAR EFFORTS HALTED BY … BEES 🐝

What’s up? Meta and Amazon recently hit obstacles in their nuclear-powered data center plans, underscoring the complexities of combining sustainability efforts with advanced AI needs.

Want the details? Meta had planned a data center on land that was later discovered to host a rare bee species, a vital part of the ecosystem. The location of the land was not disclosed to the public. Respecting environmental concerns, the company opted to avoid disrupting this habitat, delaying nuclear operations. Amazon also faced a hurdle when a government request to boost power from a nuclear plant to one of its data centers was denied, capping its use at 300 megawatts.

Why is this significant? As a result of AI efforts, emissions for tech giants have reached all-time highs. Microsoft said earlier this year that its emissions have grown at least 29% since 2020 due to AI investment. Google’s gas emissions have risen by 48% since 2019. Many of these tech companies are seeking deals for nuclear power, and despite obstacles like governmental restrictions and bees, it’s likely these efforts will continue.

How does it work? Powered by Amazon’s Bedrock AI technology, X-Ray Recaps provides brief season, episode, and scene summaries without giving away major plot twists. With this tool, you can catch up on key details without accidentally encountering spoilers online. This feature builds on Prime Video’s popular X-Ray tool, which displays cast info when you pause a show. Now, by selecting the rewind icon on a show’s detail page, you can choose between recapping the current episode, the season so far, or even the previous season.

META ALLOWS MILITARY TO USE LLAMA 3 🪖

Although Meta’s “acceptable use policy” typically prohibits AI use for military and nuclear purposes, Meta’s president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, stated that the company now supports “responsible and ethical” uses of the technology that align with democratic values. According to Meta, this collaboration supports “the safety, security, and economic prosperity” of the United States and its allies. This decision aligns Meta with companies like Microsoft, IBM, OpenAI, and Amazon, which already partner with the U.S. government on defense technology.
