U.S. DEPT. OF WAR INTRODUCES NEW AI SYSTEM 🪖
What’s new? The Pentagon officially introduced GenAI mil, a new government-approved AI tool now live across the War Department’s computer systems.
How does it work? GenAI mil is a secure generative AI platform built on Gemini for Government, a specialized version of Google’s Gemini that is approved to handle controlled but unclassified information. Access is limited to users with a common access card on the department’s nonclassified network. The tool can help users write and edit documents, answer questions, conduct research, analyze data, review satellite imagery, and even audit computer code for security risks. Clear banners remind users what information is permitted, and the system emphasizes that all outputs should be double-checked for accuracy. Additional American-made frontier AI tools are expected to be added in the future.
“I expect every member of the department to log in, learn it and incorporate it into your workflows immediately. AI should be in your battle rhythm every single day; it should be your teammate. By mastering this tool, we will outpace our adversaries.”

MCDONALD’S AI CHRISTMAS COMMERCIAL FLOPS 🙃
What happened? McDonald’s Netherlands released a fully AI-generated Christmas ad this year (above), and viewers disliked it so much that the company shut off comments and quietly removed the video.
Want the whole story? The 45-second commercial was created entirely using generative AI tools. Like many AI videos, it relies on very short, fast-cut scenes to hide continuity problems common in AI-generated footage. The result is a barrage of warped characters, harsh colors, and physics that feel slightly “off.” After strong backlash, production company The Sweetshop defended the ad, arguing that human effort was still central, citing long hours spent generating and editing thousands of AI clips into a final cut.
Why does this matter? This comes after Coke’s AI-generated Christmas ad faced a similar fate. These incidents underscore a growing tension in advertising: companies see AI as faster and cheaper, but audiences often find the results soulless or unpleasant. As brands experiment with generative AI, public reaction suggests that efficiency alone isn’t enough—people still want creativity, coherence, and a human touch, especially from companies with massive resources.
UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS USE AI TO SAVE DAIRY CALVES🐮
What’s up? Researchers at Penn State and partner universities have received a $1 million National Science Foundation grant to develop an AI-powered system that can detect deadly pneumonia in dairy calves before visible symptoms appear.
How does it work? The project, called CalfHealth, combines wearable sensors, smart robotic feeders, and low-cost Wi-Fi–based monitoring to track calves’ behavior, feeding habits, and breathing patterns. These data streams are analyzed by advanced AI models designed to spot subtle changes that signal early illness. Importantly, the system is “explainable,” meaning it doesn’t just flag a problem—it also shows farmers why a calf may be at risk. A built-in chatbot allows farmers to ask questions and explore “what if” scenarios, helping them understand and trust the technology across different farm setups.
Why does this matter? Bovine respiratory disease is the leading cause of death in dairy calves and costs the U.S. cattle industry over $1 billion each year. Earlier detection could save calves’ lives, reduce antibiotic use, improve animal welfare, and boost farmers’ profitability, while laying the groundwork for smarter disease monitoring across agriculture.
