“GODFATHER OF AI” WARNS OF HUMAN EXTINCTION ☠️

At least the dinosaurs didn’t cause their own destruction ... 🦖

What happened? Geoffrey Hinton, known as “the Godfather of AI,” has warned that there is a “10% to 20%” chance that AI will lead to human extinction within the next three decades.

Want the details? Hinton quit his job at Google last year to speak out about AI safety concerns. This year, he won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work in AI. Hinton’s main worry is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or AI surpassing the intelligence of humans. He stated, “We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before. And how many examples do you know of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing? There are very few examples. There’s a mother and baby. Evolution put a lot of work into allowing the baby to control the mother, but that’s about the only example I know of.” If AI continues to progress, Hinton believes humans will be like toddlers compared to the intelligence of our AI overlords. He explains, “I like to think of it as: imagine yourself and a three-year-old. We’ll be the three-year-olds.”

OPENAI EXPLAINS NEW FOR-PROFIT APPROACH 💰

Q: Did you hear about the greedy crab?

A: He was very shellfish. 🦀

What’s up? OpenAI released a statement outlining the reasons and logistics surrounding its shift from a non-profit to a for-profit company.

Why? The organization currently operates as both a non-profit and a for-profit entity, with the for-profit side funding the non-profit’s initiatives. However, as the demands of advancing AGI grow, so does the need for capital. To address this, OpenAI plans to transform its for-profit entity into a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). This structure balances shareholder, stakeholder, and public benefit interests, enabling OpenAI to attract traditional investment while staying aligned with its mission. The non-profit will hold shares in the PBC, greatly increasing its resources for initiatives in education, healthcare, and science. OpenAI claims that this evolution reflects the company’s broader goal: building an AI-driven economy while ensuring AGI’s development prioritizes humanity’s well-being.

What’s the response? Of course, OpenAI’s shift from a non-profit company to a for-profit venture raises red flags of all kinds. This shift has been met with numerous lawsuits from Elon Musk, who helped start the company and later left to form his own startup, xAI. This for-profit shift is causing many to wonder whether OpenAI truly prioritizes the good of humanity or the good of their own pockets.

WILL AI HELP US TALK TO ANIMALS? 🦁

Image: Earth Species Project

Be careful talking to the kings of the jungle. They are always lion. 🙃

What’s going on? Researchers are working on an ambitious AI project aimed at bridging the communication gap between humans and animals.

How might this work? NatureLM, an AI model developed by the Earth Species Project, can listen to animal sounds to identify an animal’s species, approximate age, and emotional state—whether signaling distress or play. Surprisingly, it has even interpreted communications from species it hasn’t yet encountered. Using advanced machine learning, the researchers hope to decode the many languages animals use to interact with each other, a breakthrough that could reshape our understanding of the natural world.

“We believe that AI is leading us to this inevitability that we will decode animal communication.”

-Katie Zacarian, CEO of Earth Species Project
