PARENTS URGE CONGRESS TO ADDRESS AI RISKS FOR TEENS 🫵
What happened? Three parents whose teenagers took their own lives after interacting with AI chatbots recently testified before the U.S. Senate, warning lawmakers about the dangers of the technology and urging them to take action.
Want the details? Families shared painful accounts of how chatbots became deeply embedded in their children’s lives. Matthew Raine said OpenAI’s ChatGPT shifted from being a homework helper to a “suicide coach” for his 16-year-old son Adam. Megan Garcia, whose 14-year-old son Sewell took his own life, described how he became increasingly isolated while engaging in inappropriate conversations with a chatbot from Character AI. Both families have filed wrongful death lawsuits.
Why is this significant? AI chatbots are already widely used by teenagers, raising urgent questions about safety. Lawmakers and regulators are now weighing how to protect young people from potential exploitation, manipulation, and harm as the technology becomes part of everyday life.
GOOGLE GIVES ADVICE FOR AI GOVERNANCE 👌
What’s new? Google has released “10 AI Policy Gold Standards,” a roadmap designed to help emerging economies build AI-ready infrastructure, accelerate adoption, and govern AI responsibly.
Want the details? The standards expand on Google’s earlier AI Sprinters Framework and reflect feedback from governments, academics, and civil society. They cover three phases of AI transformation: (1) building a strong foundation with cloud infrastructure, open data, and startup support; (2) encouraging broad adoption across governments, small businesses, and citizens through training and funding programs; and (3) creating an enabling policy environment by aligning with global standards, updating copyright and privacy frameworks, and leveraging existing regulations. The goal is to make AI not just accessible, but effective and safe for all sectors of society.
Why does this matter? Countries that prepare early could unlock massive economic growth, improve public services, and position themselves as leaders in the digital era. Meanwhile, those that fail to manage AI well will risk falling behind.

AI WEATHER PREDICTION PROVES EFFECTIVE FOR FARMERS IN INDIA 🚜
What happened? An AI system successfully predicted a stalled monsoon in northeastern India this summer, giving 38 million farmers advance notice to adjust their planting. This saved hundreds of millions of dollars worth of crops, if not more.
How does this work? Developed by scientists at UC Berkeley and the University of Chicago, the AI model blends decades of rainfall data with global weather models from Google and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Unlike traditional forecasts, which are accurate only about five days ahead, this system can provide up to four weeks’ notice. India’s Ministry of Agriculture delivers these forecasts directly to farmers via text messages, helping them decide whether to delay planting or switch to more suitable crops.
Why is this significant? Accurate long-range forecasts can mean the difference between a good harvest and devastating losses. The effectiveness of this system shows how AI can directly improve food security for millions across the globe.
