HOT WHEELS AND BARBIE: AI-POWERED? 🏎️

Barbie doesn’t need a doctor—only a plastic surgeon. 🙃

What happened? Mattel, the creator of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels, is teaming up with OpenAI to use AI in its toys and business operations.

Want the details? Mattel will use OpenAI’s tools, like ChatGPT, to help design new toys, come up with creative ideas, and make their teams more productive. They also plan to use AI to let people interact with brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels in new ways. Exactly what this means remains to be seen, but it likely includes more personalized or interactive play experiences.

“Each of our products and experiences is designed to inspire fans, entertain audiences, and enrich lives through play. AI has the power to expand on that mission and broaden the reach of our brands in new and exciting ways.”

-Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer of Mattel

Why is this important? With AI, Mattel can make smarter toys and improve how they work behind the scenes. This could change how kids play and how toys are made. However, it also raises questions about putting AI in the hands of children.

NEW AI MODELS DON’T NEED US TO TEACH THEM 😳

Image: MIT

Welp … we are now one step closer to an AI takeover. 😬

What’s new? MIT researchers have developed a new framework called SEAL that lets AI models teach and improve themselves without human help.

Want the details? SEAL, or Self-Adaptive LLMs, allows language models to create their own training data and update themselves using trial-and-error. The system works by generating “self-edits”—basically, the model writes instructions and examples to improve its own performance. A feedback loop rewards edits that lead to better results. In tests, SEAL-trained models actually outperformed those trained with data from more powerful models like GPT-4.1 and dramatically improved at solving puzzles, jumping from 0% accuracy to over 70%.

Why is this significant? This could be a major step toward self-improving AI—models that can grow smarter without constant human input. While we’re not at superintelligence yet, this kind of research shows how AI might someday evolve faster than we can control or predict—which is both thrilling and a little bit terrifying.

GETTY TAKES STABILITY AI TO COURT 👨‍⚖️

Another day, another lawsuit. 😬

What happened? Getty Images has taken Stability AI to court in London over the “illegal” use of its images to train image generation tools.

Want the details? Getty argues that Stability AI illegally used millions of its copyrighted photos to train its popular AI image-maker, Stable Diffusion, without permission or payment. Getty’s lawyers say this is a clear violation of intellectual property rights, while Stability claims their actions fall under “fair use” and that the case shouldn't even be tried. The trial, expected to last several weeks, could shape how courts handle the use of copyrighted material in AI training.

Why is this significant? This case could set a precedent for how AI companies must handle copyrighted content. If Getty wins, it may force tech companies to pay creators when training AI, reshaping how generative AI tools are built.
