GPT-4.5 is (purposefully) disappointing

Good morning! Thanks for joining us for a new week of AI tools, updates, and secret insights—let’s get to it. 😁

OPENAI RELEASES GPT-4.5 AS A STEPPING STONE 🦾
New week = new tech! 🤖
What’s new? OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, its most advanced AI model yet. While the model is larger and more powerful than its predecessors, OpenAI does not consider it a groundbreaking leap. Rather, it should best be viewed as a step towards GPT-5.
Want the details? Codenamed “Orion,” GPT-4.5 is available for ChatGPT Pro subscribers and API developers, with broader access expected soon. OpenAI claims that GPT‐4.5 is “at the frontier of what is possible in unsupervised learning.” The model offers improved factual accuracy, a deeper knowledge base, and better emotional intelligence, yet it still lags behind newer AI reasoning models from competitors like DeepSeek’s r1 and Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Not to mention, GPT-4.5 is extremely expensive to operate, prompting OpenAI to question its long-term availability. The company also acknowledges that traditional AI training methods are reaching their limits, signaling a shift toward more advanced reasoning models. While not a revolutionary leap, GPT-4.5 serves as a crucial stepping stone toward the next generation of AI, with GPT-5 expected later this year.
“We continue to be surprised by the creativity of the community in uncovering new abilities and unexpected use cases. With GPT‑4.5, we invite you to explore the frontier of unsupervised learning and uncover novel capabilities with us.”
GOOGLE DEMANDS 60-HOUR WORK WEEK? 😓
Is your name Google? Because you’ve got everything I’m looking for. 🙃
What’s going on? In a leaked memo, Google co-founder Sergey Brin urged engineers to work harder and longer, including a request to return to the office five days a week, arguing that in-person work will speed up AI development.
What did he say? Brin’s push comes as Google races to compete with OpenAI and Microsoft in AI. Lately, it seems Google’s models have been falling behind the capabilities of competitors. Brin personally returned to Google’s Mountain View headquarters after ChatGPT’s launch. In his memo, he encouraged engineers to work harder and faster. He claimed that “60 hours a week is the sweet spot of productivity.”
Why is this significant? The irony is clear: AI is being developed to automate coding, yet Brin wants engineers to work harder to improve it. Some argue that AI will replace engineers, whereas others believe it will create new opportunities. Either way, tech workers at Google now face pressure to return to long hours in the office, whether they like it or not.
“I think we have all the ingredients to win this race, but we are going to have to turbocharge our efforts.”
ALIBABA TO MAKE AI VIDEO CREATION FREE TO THE PUBLIC 🎥
🌟 Big News from @alibaba_cloud! 🌟

“Alibaba!” Look at that—a new AI model has appeared like magic. 🪄
What’s up? Alibaba is open-sourcing four models from its Wan2.1 series. These models are designed to generate images and videos from text and image inputs.
Want the details? Open-source AI allows researchers, businesses, and developers to use and modify the technology without restrictions. While open-source AI doesn’t directly bring in money for the company, it helps companies attract developers and drive innovation. Alibaba’s Wan2.1 models will be available for free on Alibaba Cloud’s ModelScope and Hugging Face. This decision puts Alibaba in direct competition with companies like OpenAI, which keep their AI models mostly private.
