GOOGLE BRINGS AI TO THE CLASSROOM 👩‍🏫

Q: Why did the teacher have to wear sunglasses to school?

A: Her students were too bright. 😎

What’s new? Google is making Gemini freely available to students via Google Workspace for Education.

Why? This is part of an effort to bring AI safely into education. Last year, Google made a teen-safe version of Gemini for users 13-18 years old. This included features such as the censoring of sensitive material. At the time, Google decided not to enable use of the model through school accounts. The tech powerhouse is now flipping the script, hoping to enhance the classroom experience for both teachers and students.

How will this work? Students 13 years and older in over 100 countries will be able to access Google Workspace for Education, entirely free of charge through their student Google accounts. This will include access to features like Help Me Write, Read Along, GenAI backgrounds, Google Vids, and AI-powered background noise cancellation. This platform will also benefit teachers, as they will have access to AI-powered organizational and teaching tools. For instance, they will be able to define groups of students on the platform and assign different content based on each group’s needs. Google affirms that no personal data from this program will be used to train AI models and that school administrators will be granted admin access to implement or remove features as needed.

What’s the significance? There is no doubt that AI is restructuring education, and Google is trying to lead this charge. Of course, this will not come without major pushback from schools around the globe, so keep your eye out for sneaky students and frustrated teachers.

APPLE AND META TEAM UP ON IPHONE🤝

My friend told me he found yellow apples. I said, “Dude, that’s bananas.” 🍌

What’s up? Meta is in talks with Apple to integrate its generative AI tech into the upcoming iPhone system.

Why? Apple has recently announced “Apple Intelligence,” which includes a suite of new AI-powered features for the upcoming iOS 18 update. This new partnership with Meta will provide Apple with even more resources as they attempt to perfect these features.

What’s the significance? This new collaboration aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of incorporating technology from various AI companies, including Google, OpenAI, Perplexity, and Anthropic. This approach not only provides Apple with the best of all worlds as they try to catch up in the AI race, but it also diversifies their risk in a developmental world with so much unknown.

AI DETECTS PARKINSON’S 7 YEARS IN ADVANCE 🙏

When used for the right purpose, AI proves incredibly promising to society. 🦾

What’s up? Research done by University College London and University Medical Center Goettingen has resulted in an AI blood test that has the potential to diagnose Parkinson’s disease up to seven years before symptoms appear.

How was the study done? The study utilized AI to analyze blood samples from 72 patients with rapid eye movement behavior disorder, a condition linked to higher Parkinson’s risk. Over the decade-long study, the machine learning algorithm ended up correctly predicting 79% of the patients who actually developed Parkinson’s.

What’s the significance? The test, targeting eight specific blood proteins, offers a less invasive alternative to current diagnostic methods like spinal taps. In the near future, the researchers hope to be able to do such testing with a simple finger prick, which would allow for cheaper, more widely available examinations. This showcases the ability of AI to transform modern medicine. As one expert doctor stated, such a development “underscores the importance of integrating advanced technologies into medical practice to enhance patient outcomes and transform health care delivery.”
