EXPERTS WARN OF EXTINCTION: LIKEN AI TO NUCLEAR WAR 💣

What is being said? Yesterday, the Center for AI Safety released an open letter outlining the potential risks of unchecked development and deployment of AI systems. One statement from the letter reads, “Mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.”

Who signed the letter? This open letter has been signed and supported by over 350 executives, researchers, and engineers, some of which are working for the world’s leading A.I. companies. Some notable signatories include: Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind; and Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic.

Why are experts concerned? There are a plethora of concerns raised by these experts, but some of the major concerns outlined in the letter are as follows:

1. Accountability and responsible development: As AI systems become more complex and autonomous, there is a growing fear of unintended consequences and biases that could disproportionately affect marginalized communities.

2. Potential for malicious use: With the ability to process vast amounts of data and make decisions autonomously, AI could be weaponized and threaten cybersecurity, privacy, and even national security.

3. Unemployment and economic disparity: As AI technologies automate tasks traditionally performed by humans, certain jobs may become obsolete, leading to significant disruptions in the labor market.

What applications will this have? This breakthrough is enormous for the gaming industry, as it provides players with a much more immersive experience than they have ever had before, allowing players to step into the game as a free, speaking agent. Being able to talk with NPCs and receiving AI-generated audio responses will give players a one-of-a-kind playing experience and provides the opportunity for more customization within the game’s story.

Now, I wonder if I can get these NPCs cooking up virtual french fries for me. 🤔
