AI BRAINS 🧠

Is the brain just a supercomputer in our heads? Kind of … 🤖

What happened? A recent study conducted by researchers at MIT has unveiled a fascinating connection between self-supervised learning in AI and the workings of the mammalian brain.

What was found? Self-supervised learning is a machine learning technique that enables computational models to grasp the nuances of visual scenes without relying on labels or other explicit information. The researchers found that when they employed this technique to train neural networks, the resulting models exhibited activity patterns strikingly similar to those observed in the brains of animals performing similar tasks.

What does this mean? These findings suggest that our brains might employ a form of self-supervised learning to understand the physical world, creating representations that enable us to predict what will happen in our environment. This insight not only sheds light on how our brains function but also underscores the potential of AI in unraveling the brain's mysteries.

ELON MUSK INVITED TO THE AI SUMMIT 🏔️

Q: What happened to the Twitter employee that told Elon Musk not to rename the company?

A: He became an X employee!

What’s new? Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is set to make an appearance at the long-awaited global summit on AI taking place in Britain this week.

What is the AI summit? The summit, scheduled for November 1-2, aims to bring together leaders from the world of AI, political figures, and experts to address the perceived risks associated with the rapid development of AI technologies. The ultimate goal is to establish a global consensus on its safe and responsible advancement. The agenda will include discussions on the unpredictable advancements of AI and the potential consequences of humans losing control over this powerful technology.

Who will be there? Approximately 100 participants are expected to attend, such as notable leaders like U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. However, the full guest roster remains undisclosed.

ALIBABA LOOKS TO COMPETE WITH AMERICAN AI COMPANIES 🤺

American AI companies dominate the landscape, but Alibaba is looking to do some AI magic. 🪄

What’s new? Alibaba launched its latest large language model (LLM), Tongyi Qianwen 2.0. This release marks a key milestone in the Chinese tech giant's mission to compete with its American counterparts, Amazon and Microsoft, in the AI landscape.

How does it work? Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, described as a "substantial upgrade" from its predecessor, showcases an impressive range of capabilities. These include understanding complex instructions, copywriting, reasoning, memorization, and most notably preventing hallucinations—the presentation of incorrect information by AI, something which OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been highly criticized for. This enhanced LLM paves the way for a new era of generative AI applications overseas.

What else is Alibaba doing? Alibaba is not only bolstering its AI prowess through Tongyi Qianwen 2.0, but is also providing tailored AI models for specific industries like legal counseling and finance. The introduction of this “GenAI Service Platform” allows businesses to develop their generative AI applications using their own data, addressing concerns about data privacy and security.
