MICROSOFT OUTSOURCES AI OPERATIONS TO OPENAI 🤖

Is Microsoft the tech powerhouse we really think it is? Or is it simply the sugar daddy of OpenAI? 💰

What’s up? According to Todd McKinnon, CEO of identity security firm Okta, Microsoft is transferring the development of its top AI tools and software to OpenAI.

What does this mean? Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, positioning itself as a leader in foundational AI models and challenging Google’s dominance in internet search. However, Microsoft’s heavy reliance on OpenAI for AI advancements raises concerns that it has become more of a cash cow consult than a real driver of innovative technology.

Is this good for Google? On one hand, this move from Microsoft might benefit Google’s AI efforts, which originate from its own research and thus give it more direct and cohesive insights. On the other hand, this move might benefit Microsoft by making them less liable for mistakes in research and implementation, like those Google has faced with “woke Gemini image creation” and untrustworthy responses from AI Overviews.

“It’s so bizarre. Imagine working at Microsoft. OpenAI is over there making all the exciting stuff. It’s almost like Microsoft is going to turn into a consulting company.”

-Todd McKinnon, CEO of Okta

MISS AI BEAUTY PAGEANT REACHES THE FINALS 👸

Step aside Miss America, and make room for Miss AI! 😳

What’s going on? The World AI Creator Awards, in collaboration with Fanvue, have been putting on the first ever “Miss AI” contest, consisting of over 1,500 AI-generated models with unique personas.

How does this work? These AI models represent countries across the globe and are judged according to their photorealism (which often includes videos) as well as their ability to engage audiences. Ten finalists have been selected, and a winner will be announced at the end of this month, with prizes totaling $20,000.

What are people saying? As one might expect, the reactions to this emerging trend of AI influencers and a Miss AI contest are mixed. Eric Dahan, CEO of the social media marketing company Mighty Joy, sees promise in this new form of social engagement, stating, “With this technology, we’re very much in the early stages, where I think this is the perfect type of content that’s highly engaging and super low hanging fruit to go after.” Others are hoping to see more efforts to use these AI models to promote positive messaging. For instance, Miss AI judge Sally-Ann Fawcett said she is focusing her judging efforts on the messaging around these AI beauty queens and not just on their looks. She said, “Because they are all beautiful, I want somebody that I would be proud to say is an AI ambassador and role model giving out brilliant and inspiring messages, rather than just saying, ‘hello, I’m really hot!’”

TURKISH STUDENT ARRESTED FOR USING AI ON EXAM 😳

Q: What do you call a famous inmate?

A: A cell-ebrity. 🤪

What happened? Turkish authorities have arrested a student who used a makeshift device linked to AI software to cheat during a university entrance exam.

Want the details? A police video detailed the sophisticated cheating method: a camera concealed as a shirt button transmitted exam questions to AI software via a router hidden in the student’s shoe. The AI then generated the correct answers, which were relayed to the student through an earpiece. The student, displaying suspicious behavior during the exam, was detained by police and subsequently jailed, pending trial. Another individual, implicated in aiding the student, was also detained.
