A FREE AI COURSE FROM UTAH TECH 🎓

Utah Tech University

AI is development is happening at historic rates, and many are getting left behind. Some pioneering universities are taking steps to help people catch up. 🦾

What’s up? Utah Tech University is offering a free course on generative AI this fall, open to the public.

Why is this important? We have seen universities such as Harvard University and the University of Tennessee list AI classes for this fall, helping students to understand the workings of the technology more deeply. This step by Utah Tech, however, sets an example for other universities to follow which goes beyond the scope of students and offers resources for the surrounding community to engage with the rapidly growing field.

When is the class available? The class will be held on campus in St. George, Utah on Wednesdays from Aug. 30 to Dec. 6, 2023, from 12:00-12:45 p.m. in Room 105 of Utah Tech’s Science, Engineering & Technology building.

UK TO SPEND $130M ON AI CHIPS 🤑

What the chip is going on in the AI world? 💾

What’s happening? Amidst a massive scramble for scarce AI chips, Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is set to spend over $130 million on more than 5,000 AI computer chips.

Why? Earlier this year, Rishi Sunak said that his vision is for the UK to become an “international AI tech hub.” Part of this plan includes the development of an “AI Research Resource” that will require a large amount of computing power. The 5,000+ chips purchased in this deal from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel are just a start, and it is likely government officials will seek additional funding for AI chips in an upcoming November AI safety summit.

Why the urgency? A new report found that 20% of firms cannot get enough computing power to use AI, due to the massive adoption of these chips to power AI-driven programs. For this reason, chips are a hot commodity, and whoever controls the chips can control innovation.

AI IS TRANSFORMING THE LIVES OF THOSE WITH DISABILITIES ❤️

Setting aside the financial and techy features of AI, one of the most heartwarming things about this technology is how it is helping to enhance the everyday lives of individuals for the better. 🙏

What’s happening? According to the World Health Organization, over 1 billion people live with some significant disability. AI is being used in a multitude of ways to help people live more healthily and inclusively in society despite these struggles.

How is AI transforming lives?

  • AI is transforming the lives of those with speech impediments. Applications like Voiceitt are able to analyze unique speech patterns of individuals and transcribe speech in real-time, allowing for seamless inclusion of those with even severe speech impediments in voice calls and live interactions.

  • AI is helping to enhance vision. A multitude of AI tools now have the ability to convert visual data into a variety of other formats, including audio. Many tools can also make images more interpretable through easy-to-use contrast and quality resolution features.

  • AI is helping those who struggle to hear. AI has substantially improved voice and video transcription speed and accuracy. Other tools, such as Whisper, have the ability to reduce background noise significantly so the user can more clearly hear the voice or primary sound.

  • AI is providing a solution for mobility issues. New, AI-enabled mobility assistants have been equipped with groundbreaking technology which allows for easier control. This includes voice-controlled wheelchairs and prosthetics which can more accurately detect fine-grained nerve inputs.
