CLAUDE (FINALLY) GETS INTERNET ACCESS 🛜

Image: Anthropic

Q: What did the computer geek do when he retired?

A: He started phishing. 🎣

What’s new? Anthropic’s Claude model can now search the internet to give you more up-to-date and relevant answers.

How does this work? This new feature allows Claude to pull real-time information directly from the web and include it in its responses, complete with citations so you can easily verify the sources. Instead of sifting through search results yourself, Claude processes and summarizes key points, saving you time and effort. Whether you’re analyzing market trends, researching for a project, or even comparing product reviews, Claude delivers information that reflects the latest data available. Currently, this search feature is available for paid Claude users in the U.S., with broader access coming soon.

Why should you care? Having real-time insights directly in your AI assistant makes tasks like decision-making, planning, and research faster and more accurate. Web access blends Claude’s existing knowledge with fresh information, making it a powerful tool for anyone who needs reliable, current answers. It also allows Claude to be more competitive with other real-time models like Grok, GPT-4o, and Gemini.

OPENAI LAUNCHES o1-PRO REASONING MODEL 🧠

Q: Did you hear about the hated brain surgeon?

A: People were always giving her a piece of their minds. 🙃

What’s up? OpenAI launched o1-pro, a more powerful version of its “reasoning” AI model.

Want the details? Available in OpenAI’s developer API, the new o1-pro model is designed to deliver more consistent and reliable answers by using significantly more computing power than the standard o1 model. It’s currently available to developers who’ve spent at least $5 on OpenAI’s API, but it comes with a steep price: $150 per million input tokens and $600 per million output tokens—far more expensive than other OpenAI models like GPT-4.5. Moreover, while OpenAI claims o1-pro “thinks harder” to improve responses, early users noted only modest improvements, especially in tasks like coding and math as well as mixed results in problem-solving.

Why should you care? Through this release, OpenAI is testing whether businesses and developers will pay premium rates for marginally better AI performance. If o1-pro proves valuable enough to justify its cost, it could set a new precedent for how advanced AI tools are priced and accessed in the market.

INTRODUCING A NEW AI WEATHER PREDICTOR 🌥️

Is it time to say goodbye to Mr. Weatherman? 👋

What’s new? Researchers have developed an AI system called Aardvark Weather that can create fast, accurate weather forecasts using a regular computer instead of giant supercomputers.

How does it work? Instead of using traditional, complex models that require hours of processing on specialized machines, Aardvark learns from raw data collected by satellites, weather stations, planes, and ships around the world. This allows it to learn patterns directly from real-world measurements and quickly predict how the weather will change in specific areas. It also only requires about 10% of the inputs needed by current systems.

“This is a completely different approach to what people have done before. The writing’s on the wall that this is going to transform things; it’s going to be the new way of doing forecasting.”

-Richard Turner, professor of machine learning at the University of Cambridge

Why should you care? Aardvark makes weather forecasting much faster, cheaper, and more widely available. According to the developers, a single researcher could use this model on a desktop computer to generate forecasts. This could improve warnings for natural disasters like hurricanes and help industries and communities better prepare for changing weather.
