What’s cookin’? Chinese startup Moonshot AI released Kimi K3, a new open source AI model that appears surprisingly close to the best private models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Moonshot says Kimi still trails the very top systems, but independent tests suggest it can compete with leading frontier models. Because Kimi is open source, developers can inspect, download, and build on it more freely than closed models.

🤔 Hunter’s take: This is a pretty revealing moment. China’s AI models are getting good enough to scare U.S. tech giants. But the bottleneck is no longer just talent or model design. It is raw infrastructure. The AI race may come down to who can actually serve these models at scale.

What’s cookin’? Scientists say AI could soon do more than identify chemicals in the environment and human body. A new paper argues that the next step is using AI to predict which chemicals may actually disrupt biology and contribute to disease. This approach, called functional chemical exposomics, combines advanced chemical detection, toxicology databases, biological response data, and machine learning. Instead of simply listing thousands of chemical signals found in blood, urine, tissue, or the environment, AI could help assign chemicals a risk score based on how they may affect genes, proteins, cells, or metabolism.

🤔 Hunter’s take: Modern science can now detect tons of chemicals, but detection alone does not tell us what to worry about. The real value is prioritization. If AI can help researchers separate background noise from genuine health threats, public health could become more preventive instead of reactive.
