APPLE ANNOUNCES A NEW CHATBOT 🍏

After a long silence, Apple is finally diving head-first into the AI game!

What’s new? Apple has announced the creation of a new AI-powered chatbot dubbed, “AppleGPT.” 🍏

How does it work? According to reports, Apple has constructed AppleGPT using exclusive foundational models developed within a framework named Ajax. The framework was built in the previous year and is currently operating on the Google Cloud platform. Some applications built on this platform already include Siri and Apple Maps, which caused some to believe these could be the first areas the new tech will be implemented.

When will it be released? Apple has not yet officially released the logistics of how, where, or when their chatbot will be used. However, it is expected that this tech will be incorporated into new devices set to release this fall. In the meantime, we can of course go crazy with our imaginations!

META IS OPEN-SOURCING THEIR NEW LLM 🦾

Meta is tired of OpenAI and ChatGPT hogging the spotlight. 🔦

What’s up? In a partnership with Microsoft, Meta is open-sourcing its large language model (LLM), LLaMA 2, making it free for commercial and research use.

Why? According to Meta's official statement, the decision to make LLaMA 2 accessible to businesses, startups, and researchers is driven by the goal of providing a broader range of AI tools. The aim is to foster a sense of community and encourage experimentation. Additionally, LLaMa 2 was trained on 40% more data than LLaMa 1, which includes information from “publicly available online data sources.” This advancement to the LLM is certainly significant as it becomes available for public use.

What does this mean? With the increased accessibility of LLaMA 2, we can expect a surge in the development AI-driven tools built on top of the model. Meta said its initial model garnered over 100,000 requests from researchers, and the open-source nature of LLaMA 2 is poised to have a significantly broader impact.

THE U.S. CONTINUES TO FALL BEHIND ON AI 😐

The US government is slowwww to AI, and innovators are growing tired and frustrated. 😡

What’s going on? The House of Armed Services Committee held a hearing to assess the barriers preventing the Department of Defense’s adoption of AI. The driving force of this meeting was to address concerns regarding how the U.S. can maintain its technological edge over China and the risks of falling behind.

What was said? During this congressional session, a group of AI experts informed Congress that the Pentagon's procurement process is one of the significant barriers hindering the development and application of AI.

What can be done? Alexandr Wang, the founder and CEO of data processing company Scale AI, said, “What we need to look towards in the next era of AI is doubling down on some of these fast procurement methods and ensuring that we continue to innovate.” He went on to say, “China is spending between 1% and 1.5% of its military budget on AI, while the US is spending between 0.1% and 0.2% … Adjusted for the total military budget, China is spending ten times more than the U.S.” The U.S. is already falling way behind, and it seems to be largely because leaders are uninformed about AI and are unwilling to take decisive action. 😖
