GOOGLE AI’S NEW WEATHER FORECASTER 🌦️

Next time it rains cats and dogs, be careful not to step in a poodle. 🫠

What’s new? Google researchers have unveiled a groundbreaking weather prediction model, NeuralGCM, which merges machine learning with traditional forecasting methods.

How does it work? NeuralGCM bridges the gap between fast, data-driven machine learning techniques and the accurate but computationally intensive general circulation models (GCMs). By leveraging AI to enhance small-scale predictions, such as cloud formations and microclimates, the model maintains the accuracy of conventional methods while significantly reducing computational demands. NeuralGCM has demonstrated accuracy comparable to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) for up to 15 days.

“We don’t have to throw away all the knowledge that we’ve gained over the last 100 years about how the atmosphere works. We can actually integrate that with the power of AI and machine learning as well.”

-Aaron Hill, assistant professor at the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma

Why is this important? Experts see potential for NeuralGCM beyond local forecasts, envisioning applications in predicting large-scale climate events and extreme weather risks. The possibilities could range from predicting tropical cyclones with more notice to modeling more complex climate changes that are years away. In this way, NeuralGCM’s efficiency could revolutionize climate modeling, making long-term predictions more accessible and cost-effective.

NVIDIA TO CREATE SPECIAL AI CHIP FOR CHINA 🇨🇳

Nvidia is “nacho” average chip manufacturer. 🙃

What’s new? Nvidia is developing a version of its new flagship AI chips for the Chinese market to comply with U.S. export controls.

Want the background? Nvidia unveiled its Blackwell chip series in March, with mass production slated for later this year. The B200 chip, part of this series, is 30 times faster than its predecessor in certain tasks, such as chatbot responses. However, these cutting-edge chips have been banned in China due to U.S. restrictions on chip exports.

What’s the new chip? Nvidia plans to collaborate with Inspur, a major Chinese distributor, to launch and distribute the tentatively named “B20” chip. Shipments are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2025. This move aims to counter competition from Chinese firms like Huawei and Tencent-backed Enflame. Amidst tightened U.S. export controls, Nvidia’s efforts to adapt its products for China are crucial, as the country contributed to only 17% of Nvidia’s revenue last year, down from 26% two years prior.

ADOBE RELEASES NEW AI TOOLS IN FIREFLY 🛠️

Q: What did one girl firefly say to the other?

A: You glow girl! 😆

What’s new? Adobe has released new Firefly AI tools for Photoshop and Illustrator.

What are the new features? Illustrator’s new “Generative Shape Fill” tool uses Firefly Vector to add intricate details to shapes via text prompts and Photoshop’s Firefly Image 3 model now supports text-to-image generation directly in the app. These editions will significantly speed up the creative process and help users enhance the details of their photos.

“We just want to put this technology in the hands of our users.”

-Deepa Subramaniam, Adobe’s VP of product marketing

How is this helping Adobe? Even though Adobe isn’t charging a premium subscription for generative AI features, like some competitors, it’s still seeing returns. Adobe’s strategy of integrating AI without additional subscription costs has driven massive usage, with Firefly generating over 9 billion images since its launch in March 2023. Furthermore, on its latest earnings call, the company said customers love Firefly so much that they are converting to pricier plans as a means to get more generative credits.
