AMD ACQUIRES AI SOFTWARE STARTUP, NOD.AI 🤝

AMD is tired of Nvidia hogging the spotlight. 🔦

What happened? In a bid to compete with rival chipmaker and industry leader Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has acquired open-source AI software startup, Nod.ai.

Why? While Nvidia has shown its dominance in the AI chip market, this move shows that AMD is determined to bridge the gap by investing in software development by companies like Nod.ai to complement their AI chips. As AMD president Victor Peng said, "We are executing that strategy, and doing it through internal investment as well as external acquisitions."

What else? While the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the formation of AMD's AI group—which Nod.ai will be integrated into—demonstrates the company's dedication to expanding its software team. With approximately 1,500 engineers, the majority focusing on software development, AMD plans to hire an additional 300 members this year and more in 2024.

ADOBE’S NEW AI IMAGE ENHANCER OPENS EYES 😳

Image enhancement is reaching new heights. Now, only if it can make me look like Brad Pitt … 😀

What’s new? Adobe has introduced "Project Res-Up", an innovative technology which leverages diffusion-based upsampling AI to upscale low-resolution GIFs and video footage significantly. While not yet available for beta testing, initial demonstrations suggest it has enormous potential.

How effective is it? In one striking example, Adobe transformed a 480x360 clip from the 1947 film "The Red House" into a stunning 1280x960 masterpiece, increasing pixel count by a remarkable 675%. The AI not only removed blurriness but also added intricate details, such as hair strands and highlights. Another example featured a video focusing on a baby elephant. Project Res-Up enhanced the low-resolution footage, eliminating blurriness while adding fine details like skin wrinkles. This Adobe tool surpasses the upscaling capabilities of previous projects like Nvidia's TV Shield or Microsoft's Video Super Resolution.

DETECTING AI-GENERATION WITH A WATERMARK 🤖

Just when you thought we were done talking about Adobe … there’s more! 🙌

What’s new? During the recent Adobe Max conference, the company introduced the "Content Credentials" icon, denoted as "CR," which will be embedded in the metadata of all content created or edited using Adobe software. This icon serves as a "nutrition label" for digital media, offering users valuable information at a glance.

How will it work? When a user hovers over the tamper-proof icon, they can access details such as the creation date, the content's author, the specific AI software employed, and additional historical information about the content. This initiative is part of the ongoing Content Authenticity Initiative, a collaborative effort led by Adobe and various partners such as Microsoft, Publicis Groupe, and hardware giants like Nikon and Leica. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is also on board, calling these icons a “great idea.”

Beyond a mere watermark? The "Content Credentials" icon offers advantages beyond image and video verification. It can serve as a digital signature for creators, help freelance designers acquire business, and provide essential verification tools in conflict zones and regions lacking a free press. In a digital landscape saturated with AI-generated content, Adobe's "Content Credentials" icon, along with the support of other major players, aims to provide transparency and build trust with the public. This initiative represents a critical move toward ensuring that authenticity and integrity are upheld in an increasingly AI-powered media world.
