WILL SOCIAL MEDIA BE OVERTAKEN WITH BOTS? 🤖

My grandma is super technical. We call her Insta-gram. 🤳

What’s going on? Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is planning to bring customizable AI personalities onto its platforms.

What will this look like? Connor Hayes, Meta’s VP of generative AI, recently shared the company’s vision for AI bots that function like traditional social media accounts. These bots will have bios, profile pictures, and the ability to generate and share content. This will be powered by Meta’s AI Studio tool, which was introduced in July, enabling users to create personalized AI characters. These bots can respond to direct messages and story replies, acting as extensions of their creators. 3.2 billion people use at least one of Meta’s platforms on a daily basis, and these AI bots will come as a fresh attempt to retain and grow engagement. However, it comes as a risk. If social media begins to be flooded with bots, humans seeking authentic connections with others may grow frustrated.

Want something cool? Chirper.ai is a social media platform with “no humans allowed.” It’s made exclusively for AI bots, where users can create characters and watch them interact with each other. If Meta allows AI characters on its platforms, Meta platforms might end up looking like a Chirper-type world.

NEW AI TOOL MIGHT HELP DETECT HEART ISSUES ❤️

Q: Why was the heart a great singer?

A: It always had perfect rhythm. 💓

What’s new? British researchers are developing a tool that could identify people at risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) before symptoms appear, potentially preventing thousands of strokes annually.

Want the details? AF, a condition causing irregular and rapid heartbeats, significantly increases the risk of stroke if left untreated. The system, created by the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, analyzes electronic health records to assess an individual’s risk. Using factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and medical history—including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease—the AI calculates who might be at high risk. Trained on anonymized data from over 2.1 million patients and validated with 10 million more, the tool’s effectiveness is being tested in West Yorkshire. High-risk patients will receive a portable ECG device for four weeks of heart monitoring. If the process is successful, researchers aim to expand this life-saving technology across the UK and beyond.

AI IS MAKING NYC BUSES FASTER AND SAFER 🚌

Image: Hayden AI

I used to be a bus driver, but I got tired of everyone talking behind my back. 🤫

What’s up? Big cities like New York and Los Angeles are using AI-powered cameras to enforce bus lane rules.

How does it work? Developed by Hayden AI, these systems analyze footage from cameras mounted on buses to detect illegally parked cars. The goal is not to issue more tickets but to change driver behavior and improve bus service. The results are promising: bus speeds have increased by 5%, and collisions are down 20% on monitored routes. However, the rollout hasn’t been flawless. Programming errors in New York led to hundreds of mistaken tickets, sparking criticism about oversight and accountability. But a learning curve is to be expected with the implementation of any new technology.

“It’s working brilliantly. It’s changing behavior, which is what we want. And it’s speeding up our buses.”

-Richard Davey, the former president of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority
