APPLE “INTELLIGENCE” ISN’T THAT INTELLIGENT 🙃
Q: What is it called when someone gets fired from Apple?
A: Apple turnover. 🍎
What’s up? Apple’s new “Intelligence” features have finally launched, but many users find them underwhelming.
What’s so underwhelming? The initial Apple Intelligence updates include AI tools to summarize notifications, clean up photos, and assist with email drafts—all designed to streamline our daily digital lives. However, while these features sound promising, the execution feels incomplete. Take, for instance, the Clean Up tool in Photos. It does a fair job of erasing unwanted objects from images, but it isn’t significantly better than similar tools Google has offered for years. In Mail, AI-generated summaries replace the usual preview line, but for many, the email subject line already suffices. Siri, with new AI tweaks, is also marginally better at handling language and accessing settings. Still, the biggest promised updates, like contextual awareness and ChatGPT integration, are slated for 2025. So, while Apple is playing catch-up in the AI race, this release feels more like a warm-up than a game-changer.
“If you want to make it look like a helicopter crashed in an empty meadow, then sure, there’s AI for that. But if you want help getting things done? That’s not quite ready.”
Why should you care? Apple has been hyping up “Apple Intelligence” for months, and it has yet to deliver anything worthy of such media attention. Let this serve as another call to be wary of “groundbreaking AI updates” as more of a marketing ploy than a substantive way to improve your life.
GMAIL GETS AN AI INFUSION 📧
Is talking about emails in an email overkill? 🤷♂️
What’s new? Google is expanding its “Help Me Write” feature to Gmail on the web, making it easier for premium users to create or edit emails using Gemini AI.
How does it work? This tool, previously available only on mobile, will now prompt users to use the feature when they start a blank draft on desktop. Beyond just drafting emails, “Help Me Write” offers options to adjust a message’s tone or length, including choices to formalize, expand, or condense content. Google is also adding a quick “Polish” shortcut for emails with over 12 words, allowing users to refine their message with a simple click or by pressing Ctrl + H on web. On mobile, the “Polish” update will replace the “Refine My Draft” shortcut, automatically enhancing the draft after a swipe. For now, these new features are exclusively accessible to Google One AI Premium subscribers or users with the Gemini add-on for Workspace.
META JOINS THE SEARCH ENGINE PARTY 🥳
Q: Where does Mario go when he has a question?
A: Yahoo! 🤪
What’s up? Meta is developing its own AI-powered search engine to compete with Google and Microsoft.
Want the details? Meta's goal is to create a search tool that delivers AI-generated event summaries through its chatbot, integrated into platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This effort was highlighted by a recent licensing deal with Reuters. OpenAI has been making a similar effort through SearchGPT. Perplexity has provided an AI-driven solution as well. The effort of these companies to leverage AI for conversational search is a threat to Google’s dominance, which has tried to stay ahead by providing controversial “overviews” to the top of search results.
