THE NEW AI POCKET COMPANION 🦾

Want more AI? You can now find it in your pocket. 🤖

What’s new? Jesse Lyu, the visionary CEO and founder of AI startup Rabbit, has released the R1, an AI pocket companion.

What is R1? The R1 boasts an impressive 2.88-inch touchscreen, a rotating camera for photos and videos, and a sleek design crafted in collaboration with Teenage Engineering. R1 is built on Rabbit’s proprietary operating system, Rabbit OS, powered by a “Large Action Model” (LAM). Lyu likens it to a universal controller for apps, offering a seamless interface for music, transportation, video chats, and more. What makes the R1 truly distinctive is its training mode, allowing users to teach the device specific tasks. Lyu envisions users guiding the R1 through processes like Photoshop, enabling it to autonomously repeat actions in the future. It’s worth mentioning that Lyu doesn’t intend to replace smartphones with this device; instead, he envisions the R1 as an ambitious companion that could redefine our relationship with technology.

Will people buy this? The R1, priced at $199, sold out 10,000 units in its initial offering, which lasted less than a day. This highlights the eagerness of the public to experiment with new AI tech.

AI-GENERATED COMEDY SPECIAL SPARKS CONTROVERSY 🙃

Did you expect me to tell a joke here? 🤪

What’s new? The iconic comedian George Carlin, who passed away 15 years ago, has returned to the stage with the help of AI in a generated stand-up special titled “George Carlin: I'm Glad I'm Dead” (above).

What is the special like? Released by the comedy AI Dudesy, in collaboration with Will Sasso and Chad Kultgen, the hour-long special confronts contemporary issues with Carlin’s signature wit. Dudesy preemptively clarifies that the performance is an impersonation meticulously crafted by the AI after studying Carlin’s extensive material. Addressing pertinent topics like mass shootings, the American class system, streaming services, social media, and even AI itself, the digital Carlin humorously asserts that stand-up comedy might be the job most threatened by AI.

What is the response? Despite the innovation of the AI tribute, George Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, expressed skepticism, emphasizing her father’s irreplaceable human genius. In a statement on X, she encouraged listeners to explore Carlin's authentic body of work, underscoring the irreplaceable essence of human creativity in the face of AI creations.

IS AI THE “BIGGEST THREAT” TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY? 💰

I recently started investing heavily in penny stocks … It just seems to make a lot of “cents.” 🤑

What’s up? In an annual report, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has issued a stark warning, identifying a wave of AI-driven misinformation and disinformation as “the biggest short-term threat to global economy.”

“This is a very gloomy outlook but it is not a prediction of the future. The future is very much in our hands.”

-Saadia Zahidi, managing director of the WEF

Why? The underlying worry is the sophistication of AI-developed content, including articles and deepfake images and videos which have the ability to influence large groups of people. This could have the power to impact business, political, and personal opinions and decisions in a way that might not match reality.
