AI TO TRACK METHANE EMISSIONS FROM SPACE 🔭

I think Saturn’s name is the best in our solar system … It has a nice ring to it. 🪐

What’s up? Google and the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) have joined forces to tackle methane pollution and monitor oil and gas infrastructure from space using cutting-edge AI technology.

How will this work? The partnership aims to map methane emissions globally, helping identify and rectify leakages that reportedly contribute significantly to climate change and other environmental issues. EDF is set to launch MethaneSAT, a satellite equipped to track methane emissions with unprecedented accuracy, while Google will utilize AI to map oil and gas infrastructure from that data. By combining satellite data and AI technology, the initiative promises a detailed and up-to-date global map of pollution sources, providing valuable insights for energy companies, researchers, and the public sector.

Where can I see the results? The data will be made publicly available through MethaneSAT’s website and Google Earth Engine.

COUNTRY MUSIC CAPITAL CRACKS DOWN ON AI VOICE 🎸

Q: What did Tennessee?

A: Same thing Arkansas. 👁️

What happened? The Tennessee House Banking and Consumer Affairs Subcommittee has unanimously passed the “Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security Act” (HB 2091), A.K.A. the ELVIS Act, aimed at safeguarding musicians from AI infringement on copyrights.

What’s ELVIS? Introduced by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, ELVIS targets the unauthorized use of artists’ voice, image, and likeness, offering protection to Tennessee’s vibrant music community and all state residents. This is especially relevant in Nashville, known as the country music capital of the world, a music industry hub which contributes $5.5 billion annually to the local economy.

“When a machine can take songs born from a lifetime of my experiences, and produce a record that an artist never authorized, never even sang, resulting in a fake version release without permission or payment – that is wrong, that is theft, and we need to protect against it.”

-Jamie Moore, Nashville Songwriter Association board member and songwriter

Why is this important? The ELVIS Act stands as a pioneering measure in recognizing and safeguarding artists’ creativity in the age of advancing AI technology. This state-wide measure presents a standard for action in other areas, including at the federal level.

MOZILLA FIRES 60 EMPLOYEES, FOCUS TURNS TO AI 🤖

Mozilla FIRE-(fox)-D 60 people due to AI restructuring … That’s a bit of a stretch, but you get the point! 🤣

What happened? Mozilla recently appointed a new “interim” CEO, sparking strategic shifts that included significant layoffs and a realignment of focus towards AI.

Want some details? Mozilla has decided to cut back on their VR Hubs project, leading to a cut of 5% of their workforce. Instead, they are eyeing the AI landscape, spurred by the 2023 acquisition of Fakespot, an AI-driven fake product review identifier. Mozilla’s newest company memo hints at integrating generative AI into their Firefox search engine, potentially signaling a move towards developing chatbots or webpage summarizers. Capturing only 3% of browsers worldwide, they see no better time than now to hop on the AI train.
