SCARLETT JOHANSSON TAKES LEGAL ACTION AGAINST AI APP π©ββοΈ
AIβs use of image and likeness is continuing to become one of the biggest ethical and legal issues in the space. π¬
Whatβs going on? Scarlett Johansson, the renowned Hollywood actress, is taking legal action against an AI app that utilized her name and likeness in an online advertisement without her consent.
What was the ad? The 22-second ad, shared on X, was generated by an AI app known as Lisa AI, and it featured Johansson without her endorsement. The unauthorized ad began with a clip of Johansson from her role in Marvel's "Black Widow" and used her image to promote the AI app. Despite a disclaimer in fine print indicating that the images were produced by Lisa AI and not endorsed by Johansson, the use of her likeness raised ethical and legal concerns.
What is the response? Johansson's representatives confirmed that she is not associated with the app, and her attorney, Kevin Yorn, initiated legal proceedings in response to this infringement. Although the offending advertisement has since disappeared from the internet, Johansson's legal team remains steadfast in their resolve to address the issue using legal remedies.
WHAT HAPPENED AT THE GLOBAL AI SAFETY SUMMIT? π

Safe AI development has taken the spotlight this week and will continue to be a top concern around the globe going forward. π¦Ύ
What happened? The recent A.I. Safety Summit in Britain brought together policymakers, researchers, and tech leaders from around the world. The event marked a significant step forward with the signing of the Bletchley Declaration by 28 countries, including the United States and China, agreeing to cooperate on evaluating the risks of AI.
How is AI being handled? As AI evolves, it holds the promise of accelerating disease diagnosis, combating climate change, and streamlining manufacturing processes. However, it also presents significant risks, including job displacement, disinformation, and national security threats. The conference has revealed the contrasting approaches of various nations to safeguard AI development. While the US, EU, and China are pursuing their own regulations and safeguards, the UK has adopted a more hands-off stance, with a focus on assessing AI safety without immediate regulatory action.
What was the significance? The participation of global leaders, such as King Charles III, Vice President Kamala Harris, and China's Wu Zhaohui highlight the urgency of addressing AI's challenges. While some may argue that the conference has been symbolic rather than substantive, it nonetheless represents a crucial step in the ongoing dialogue about AI safety.
βAIβ CROWNED WORD OF THE YEAR FOR 2023 π
Is βAIβ even a word? π€¨
What happened? "AI" has been crowned Collins Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2023
AI: abbreviation for artificial intelligence: the modeling of human mental functions by computer programs
What does this indicate? This award, though not too impressive in itself, serves as an indication of the public influence of AI. The rapid development and integration of AI into our daily lives has propelled it to the forefront of public consciousness. While AI's ability to mimic human speech and thought processes initially fascinated us, it also raised concerns about the potential implications. If computers could excel in a realm as quintessentially human as language, what boundaries would be left uncrossed? This curiosity and anxiety prompted an explosion of debates, scrutiny, and predictions, all contributing to the selection of AI as the Word of the Year.
