AI-GENERATED CONTENT CONTINUES TO CONFUSE THE PUBLIC 😳

A screenshot of a now deleted X post about the AI-generated audio of Keir Starmer abusing his staff
In a dizzying world where AI can create images and videos of almost anyone doing almost anything, it is vital we be extra cautious before jumping to conclusions! 😵💫
What happened? An audio clip depicting Keir Starmer, Britain's opposition leader, verbally abusing his staff was posted on social media. However, the authenticity of the recording has been debunked.
Some more background? The audio surfaced on a pseudonymous account on the opening day of the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, garnering over 1.4 million views. Despite the contentious political climate, bipartisan condemnation of the fake audio emerged. Conservative Party MP Simon Clarke urged people to disregard it, while security minister Tom Tugendhat highlighted the threat posed by deepfakes to democracy.
Why is this relevant? Deepfake images and videos can have a massive impact on public perception and opinion of public figures and political candidates, and these deepfakes are not always easy to detect. This particular incident in the UK highlights the need for protection against AI-generated disinformation, especially as countries like the United States brace for potential deepfake interference in the upcoming general election.
AI PREDICTS SCHIZOPHRENIA 🧠

AI is making unbelievable strides in the medical field once again! 🙌
What’s new? Scientists at the UCL Institute for Neurology have developed new AI tools that can characterize subtle signatures in the speech of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The study was funded by Wellcome and will appear in PNAS Journal.
What was the study? The researchers conducted verbal fluency tasks with 26 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia and 26 control participants. They asked the participants to name as many words as possible from specified categories within five minutes. The team then employed an AI language model, trained on vast amounts of internet text, to predict the words participants would generate. Their findings were intriguing: the AI model more accurately predicted word choices in the control group compared to those with schizophrenia, particularly in individuals with more severe symptoms. This disparity hints at a potential link between speech patterns and how the brain constructs and stores “cognitive maps”—complex webs connecting memories and ideas.
What’s next? These researchers plan to expand their study to a larger patient sample and diverse speech settings to further validate its clinical utility. Dr. Nour, the lead author of the study, said, “Until very recently, the automatic analysis of language has been out of reach of doctors and scientists. However, with the advent of AI language models such as ChatGPT, this situation is changing.”
AI WILL SOON SURPASS ELECTRIC USAGE OF ENTIRE COUNTRIES 🔋

I just opened my water bill and my electricity bill at the same time … Needless to say, I was shocked. ⚡️
What happened? A recent study estimates that by 2027, AI servers could consume between 85-134 terawatt hours of electricity annually. To put this in perspective, that's roughly equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of countries like Argentina, the Netherlands, or Sweden.
Why is this important? The environmental impact of AI continues to be a growing concern for both electricity usage and water usage needed to cool computing systems. This new study serves as a beacon for more sustainable resources to power these massive systems.
