AI makes radiation safer

What’s new? A new AI model, developed by researchers at University of California San Diego, could make prostate cancer radiation therapy more precise and reduce harmful side effects.

Want the details? The research team built an AI system that can locate the urethra — the tiny tube that carries urine through the prostate — on MRI scans. During prostate cancer radiation treatment, doctors must carefully avoid this structure to prevent urinary problems. But the urethra is small and often hard to see clearly, even for experienced specialists. Using powerful supercomputers, the team trained the AI on scans from 71 patients across six hospitals. When tested, the system outlined the urethra within about two millimeters of expert doctors’ markings, performing as well as or better than many specialists.

Why does this matter? Small differences in radiation planning can lead to long-term side effects. If future trials confirm the results, this AI tool could help doctors deliver safer, more consistent prostate cancer treatment and improve quality of life for patients.

What happened? The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a case asking whether an AI system can be listed as the legal author of a copyrighted work.

Want the details? The decision leaves in place a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit that says copyright law requires a human author. Computer scientist Stephen Thaler had tried to register an AI-generated artwork called A Recent Entrance to Paradise, listing his software, “Creative Machine,” as the sole creator. The U.S. Copyright Office rejected the application, saying the Copyright Act of 1976 only protects works made by humans. The appeals court agreed, explaining that copyright law ties ownership and time limits to a human life.

Why should you care? It’s no secret that AI tools are creating more art, music, and writing every day. But at least for now, only humans can hold copyrights. The Supreme Court denying this appeal tells us AI copyrights could still be a long way off.
