What happened? OpenAI says one of its reasoning models has solved an 80-year-old math problem called “the planar unit distance problem,” overturning a long-held belief in discrete geometry. This marks the first time AI has autonomously solved a prominent open problem central to the field of mathematics.

Want the details? The problem asks a simple question: if you place points on a flat plane, how many pairs can be exactly one unit apart? For decades, mathematicians thought square-grid-style arrangements were basically the best possible. OpenAI says its model found a new infinite family of point arrangements that does better, giving a meaningful polynomial improvement over the old construction. The proof was then checked by outside mathematicians, and the argument surprisingly uses ideas from algebraic number theory, a much deeper area of math than you might expect for a geometry question.
