AI DETECTS CANCER WITH 17% GREATER ACCURACY 🩻
In 2024, there will be about 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer and around 35,250 cases resulting in death. 😔
What’s up? A UCLA study revealed that an AI tool called “Unfold AI” was able to identify prostate cancer with 84% accuracy, significantly higher than the 67% accuracy rate of physicians.
How does it work? Ali Kasraeian, M.D., a urologist at Kasraeian Urology, described the process: “The AI takes the information that we currently have about a patient’s prostate cancer—like their pathology, imaging and biopsy results—and creates a 3D cancer estimation map.” Created by Avenda Health and recently approved by the FDA, the tool was tested against a team of seven urologists and three radiologists. They each analyzed 50 cases where tumors had been removed, looking for signs of residual cancer. As a result, the AI outperformed the human experts, indicating a significantly lower chance of missing residual cancer.
“The results we get from Unfold AI tell us if a patient will be better suited for focal therapy or more radical therapy, such as radical prostatectomy, or radiation therapy, ensuring we optimize their cancer cure, the personalization of their cancer care, and their quality of life goals.”
OPENAI LOOKS TO DEVELOP ITS OWN CHIPS 💾
If these AI companies stopped focusing on “chips” and started focusing on French fries instead, they would be much better off. 🍟
What’s happening? OpenAI has initiated discussions with semiconductor designers, including Broadcom, to develop a new AI chip.
Why? This effort aims to reduce OpenAI’s reliance on chips from Nvidia and strengthen its supply chain. OpenAI has acknowledged that the limiting factor of AI is capacity: chip capacity, energy capacity, and compute capacity. One insider stated, “[OpenAI] is not just going to sit back and let others build [that] when they are on the front line.” By creating its own chip, OpenAI will be able to solve the power bottleneck many of its competitors face.
AI’S CHILD ABUSE PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE 👎
The bright side of AI is very exciting, but the dark side is incredibly sad. 😞
What’s up? A recent report from the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) reveals a disturbing rise in AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online.
What did they find? In a 30-day review of a dark web forum used to share CSAM, the IWF found a total of 3,512 CSAM images and videos created with AI. This is a 17% increase in CSAM images and videos from a similar review conducted in the fall of 2023.
What can be done? Last summer, seven of the largest AI companies in the U.S. signed a public pledge to abide by a handful of ethical and safety guidelines surrounding CSAM. As a result, many of the image and video generators provided by these large companies have tightened restrictions on mimicking people and depicting harmful events or situations. However, these companies have no control over the numerous smaller AI programs that have littered the internet, often free to use. This trend complicates efforts by law enforcement and tech companies to detect and prevent the spread of CSAM. It’s also worth noting that if CSAM is found, it’s almost impossible to figure out who created it. Further, there are disagreements on who is to be blamed—the developers of the AI tool used to create the content or the users themselves. Needless to say, we find ourselves in a very tough and complicated situation as the very tools that have the potential to be used for great good are also being used for evil.
