AI TO INFILTRATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL 🏈

Could football see a massive shift to automated assistant coaches? It might not be long before we see robots on the sidelines and LLM’s in the coaches’ headsets. 🏟️

What’s happening? Developers have recently shown how AI could massively improve in-game coaching and offseason recruiting by analyzing film and data on specific teams and players in ways humans never could.

How can this work?

“It’s third-and-4 at their own 35 in the third quarter on the road on a warm afternoon, what play is this team likely to run?” … “We are looking for a mobile quarterback who has a high completion rating on throws longer than 15 yards. Who is the best incoming senior QB who fits this description?”

AI’s ability to answer these sort of questions based on probability data and available information on players has been tested by developers and proved successful. This might allow coaches to have real-time access to advanced in-game play calling as well as help narrow down prospects in the recruiting portal.

What are college football coaches saying about AI?

“We spend a lot of time on profiles, recruiting profiles and the intangibles or the traits that we’re looking for particular players … I think AI has an opportunity maybe to create that kind of model for us relative to who is that kind of player out there all over the country, without making a mistake. So I think that there’s going to be room for it, and I think it’s exciting and something that we’re about to venture into.”

Brian Kelly (LSU)

“We’re all looking for any advantage.”

Mark Stoops (Kentucky)

“AI is infiltrating in so many different areas from business, I’m sure in sport, too. Eventually it becomes a resource probably for everybody inside of college football. You know, how quickly that part takes inside of our program, I can’t give you an answer on. But I’m sure that at some point it will.”

AI IS HELPING DETECT WILDFIRES 🔥

Wildfires have become a serious issue, and any help we can get is worth taking seriously. 🙏

What’s happening? Firefighters in California are utilizing the “ALERTCalifornia AI program” which uses the power of AI to detect wildfires in their early stages.

How does this work? The AI platform was designed by engineers at UC San Diego who utilize technology called DigitalPath. The AI program employs 1,038 smart cameras stationed across the state. Each camera is equipped with the ability to turn 360 degrees and to alert first responders when a fire or extreme smoke is detected. Neal Driscoll, a professor of geology and geophysics at UCSD and the principal investigator of ALERTCalifornia, said, “We’re in extreme climate right now. So we give them the data, because this problem is bigger than all of us. We need to use technology to help move the needle, even if it’s a little bit.”

Is it actually working? A few weeks ago, a fire broke out at 3 A.M. in the Cleveland National Forest, approximately 50 miles east of San Diego. Because most were asleep, it was a difficult fire to detect. However, an ALERTCalifornia AI program camera detected the fire and alerted the authorities. 45 minutes, 60 firefighters, 2 bulldozers, and 2 water tankers later, the potentially disastrous wildfire was diminished.

WHATSUP WITH WHATSAPP? 💬

What’s new with WhatsApp? Or should I say, “🤷‍♂️🆕📲

What’s up? The Meta-owned messaging application, WhatsApp, is currently testing an innovative AI feature, which will enable users to generate personalized stickers for enriching their conversations.

How will this work? Utilizing this functionality is straightforward. Users only need to tap a button and input a description like "a cat wearing a hat" or "a dog playing fetch." Subsequently, WhatsApp will produce a set of stickers that align with the given description. From these outcomes, users can pick their preferred ones and share them within their ongoing chats. While Meta will supply the security technology for crafting these stickers, the precise generative AI model employed by WhatsApp remains undisclosed.
