INTRODUCING FIGURE 02: THE MOST ADVANCED ROBOT YET 🤖

Q: What is a robot’s favorite type of music?

A: Heavy metal. 🦾

What’s up? The new Figure 02 humanoid robot has officially launched, marking significant advancements over its predecessor, Figure 01.

What is Figure 02? Equipped with six onboard cameras, Figure 02 can navigate its environment with improved vision. Its hands, boasting 10 fingers and 16 degrees of freedom, are designed for “human-like strength,” with a maximum carrying capacity of 25kg (about 55 pounds), up from Figure 01’s 20kg. Enhancements to the battery pack now offer over 50% more energy, extending the robot’s runtime beyond the original 5 hours. Additionally, a partnership with OpenAI enables conversational interactions via built-in speakers and microphones, similar to ChatGPT’s mobile app. Notably, the wires in Figure 02 are more discreetly integrated, signaling a shift from the prototyping phase toward a production-ready model.

What’s the purpose of Figure 02? Figure 02 is built for work, especially in industrial and factory settings. Figure has collaborated with BMW, where Figure 01 has been working and Figure 02 has been tested. This shows that the new robot is poised for real-world application in industrial settings.

NVIDIA DATA SCRAPING GETS LEAKED 😳

My friend is obsessed with this new girl he met. I think he should data. 🥰

What’s new? A 404 Media investigation found leaked materials revealing that Nvidia has been utilizing “a human lifetime” of YouTube videos, Netflix shows, and other sources each day to train AI models for its Omniverse, autonomous vehicles, and digital avatar platforms.

Want the details? 404 Media’s investigation uncovered an internal project, codenamed Cosmos, where Nvidia employees used dozens of virtual PCs on Amazon Web Service (AWS) to download over 30 million URLs in just one month. This is the equivalent of “80 years of videos each day.” This discovery comes amidst YouTube’s lawsuit against Nvidia for illegally swiping videos for training.

Is this illegal? Despite the potential copyright infringements associated with these actions, Nvidia claims to have found creative ways to stay within legal boundaries. For instance, the company used Google’s cloud service to access the YouTube-8M dataset without directly downloading videos, ensuring ad revenue for the platform. Nvidia insists it has continually complied with copyright laws by using such methods, but the data was intended for commercial use, which will most likely prove costly for the case.

OPENAI CO-FOUNDER LEAVES FOR RIVAL COMPANY 👋

The mass exodus at OpenAI continues. 🙃

What happened? John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, has left the company after 9 years to join rival AI startup Anthropic.

Why? Schulman said his desire to focus more on AI alignment and engage in hands-on technical work drove this decision. He stated, “I’ve decided to pursue this goal at Anthropic, where I believe I can gain new perspectives and do research alongside people deeply engaged with the topics I’m most interested in.”

What else? If Schulman leaving isn’t enough, Peter Deng, a product manager who joined OpenAI last year after leading products at Meta, Uber, and Airtable, has also left the company. OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman is additionally planning to take an extended leave until the end of the year to “relax and recharge.” This all comes only a few months after prominent AI safety leaders Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever left the company. Needless to say, internal troubles continue for the ChatGPT creators.
