CLAUDE CAN NOW CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER 💻

That’s right … computers are now controlling computers. 🤯

What’s up? Anthropic released an upgraded version of its AI model, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, which now includes a “computer use” API.

How does this work? Computer use allows Claude to interact with a computer like a person—moving the cursor, clicking buttons, and typing. Anthropic developed this feature by training Claude on screenshots and precise cursor movements, enabling it to navigate and use software just like a human. This feature offers the potential to automate desktop tasks, although it is currently error-prone and requires human guidance. In one error, Claude accidentally clicked to stop a long-running screen recording, causing all footage to be lost. In another, Claude suddenly took a break from a coding demo and began to peruse photos of Yellowstone National Park. Anthropic is looking for feedback from initial users to help correct these types of errors and refine the model. The company sees this release as a first step toward safer, more advanced AI models capable of managing complex software interactions.

“We expect that ‘computer use’ will rapidly improve to become faster, more reliable, and more useful for the tasks our users want to complete. It’ll also become much easier to implement for those with less software-development experience.”

-Anthropic

QUALCOMM AND GOOGLE TEAM UP TO BRING AI TO CARS 🚙

Q: Why does it cost so much to put air in a tire?

A: Inflation. 🛞

What’s new? Qualcomm and Google have teamed up in a multi-year partnership to bring generative AI to cars.

Want more details? This collaboration aims to create a standard platform that carmakers can use to integrate AI features into their vehicles more easily. With these integrations, drivers would be able to enjoy personalized in-car experiences, such as smart voice assistants and real-time map updates. For example, the AI could automatically set up navigation based on your calendar or suggest pulling over for coffee if it detects you’re getting sleepy. It could even identify landmarks or read road signs as you drive. This technology promises a seamless blend of convenience, safety, and entertainment for drivers. All of this will run on Android Automotive OS and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis.

CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS SIGN “STATEMENT ON AI TRAINING” ✍️

The best that “creative professionals” could come up with was a one-sentence statement? 😆

What’s new? Over 11,500 creative professionals, including actor Kevin Bacon and author James Patterson, have signed a statement speaking out against AI companies’ unlicensed use of their work.

What is the statement? The one-sentence statement, organized by British composer Ed Newton-Rex, highlights the concern that while AI companies invest heavily in technology and talent, they often expect to use copyrighted creative work for free. The signatories argue that using their intellectual property without permission to train AI models threatens their livelihoods.

“The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works, and must not be permitted.”

Why is this significant? Since the release of ChatGPT almost two years ago, copyright concerns have emerged left and right. It has quickly become one of the biggest issues in AI. If you want to know what the underlying issue is and why the solutions are not as simple as they may seem, check out Fry Guy’s deep-fried dive on this topic.
