“GODFATHER OF AI” ADVOCATES FOR UBI 💰

Image: WALL-E

Will AI eventually do all our work for us? 😳

What’s up? Renowned computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, often dubbed the “godfather of AI,” said the government will need to instantiate a universal basic income (UBI) to address growing economic inequalities exacerbated by AI advancements.

Why? Hinton, who left Google to speak more openly about AI’s risks, expressed deep concerns about AI replacing numerous mundane jobs, urging the government to implement a benefits reform providing fixed cash amounts to all citizens. Hinton, a pioneer in neural networks which are foundational to today’s AI models, highlighted that while AI boosts productivity and wealth, the financial gains typically benefit the wealthy, leaving displaced workers at a disadvantage. However, despite advocacy for UBI from some like Hinton, a government spokesman said there are currently “no plans to introduce a universal basic income.”

Why is this important? As AI advancements and implementation continues, many worry about job displacement. As a result, this push for UBI will inevitably continue. Whether it is even feasible or will ever become a reality is unlikely, but in our new AI-driven world, never say never.

OPENAI DISSOLVES AI RISK ASSESSMENT TEAM 🙃

OpenAI is doing some risky business … 😬

What’s up? OpenAI has disbanded its “Superalignment team,” which was focused on assessing and mitigating long-term AI risks.

Why? This decision comes after both team leaders, OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, announced their departures from the company. This was due to internal disagreements. Leike, for instance, stated, “I joined because I thought OpenAI would be the best place in the world to do this research. However, I have been disagreeing with OpenAI leadership about the company’s core priorities for quite some time, until we finally reached a breaking point.”

What does this mean? OpenAI’s Superalignment team, announced in 2023, has been working to achieve “scientific and technical breakthroughs to steer and control AI systems much smarter than us,” and the company was reportedly committing 20% of its computing power to this project. Now, OpenAI is back at square one to figure out how they are going to assess and control the risks of their emerging models. These unfortunate events also highlight disagreement within OpenAI’s leadership, which has been continually questioned.

REDDIT SIGNS COPYRIGHT DEAL WITH OPENAI 🤝

Q: What is a zombie’s favorite dessert?

A: A handshake. 🧟‍♀️

What’s new? OpenAI and Reddit signed a deal which will allow OpenAI to access real time content from Reddit’s API.

What does this mean? As a result of this deal, OpenAI will be able to link discussions from Reddit into ChatGPT responses. In return, Reddit will be able to use advanced technology from OpenAI to power new AI-driven features to enhance user and moderator experiences. The financial details have yet to be detailed.

“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up to date human conversations about anything and everything. Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more or what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit.”

-Steve Huffman, Reddit Co-Founder and CEO

Why is this important? Google has recently signed a $60 million deal with Reddit to use their content to train Gemini and other AI models. This new deal between OpenAI and Reddit highlights an attempt of OpenAI to keep up with Google and access real time content. This deal will also help OpenAI as they look to develop a GPT-powered search, a rumored chatbot meant to compete with traditional Google search.
