CAN OPENAI’S NEW MODEL EXTEND LIFE BY 10 YEARS? 🧬
I’m going to live forever or die trying. 🙃
What’s new? OpenAI is venturing into longevity science with a new AI model called GPT-4b micro.
How does it work? GPT-4b micro is being trained in partnership with Retro Biosciences, a startup aiming to extend human life by 10 years. The model focuses on re-engineering Yamanaka factors—proteins capable of turning skin cells into youthful stem cells. This could lead to advancements like regenerating human organs and creating supplies of replacement cells, key steps toward combating aging. While similar to Google’s AlphaFold, which predicts protein shapes, GPT-4b micro is OpenAI’s first AI model specifically tailored for biological research. OpenAI and Retro plan to share their findings with the broader scientific community, potentially opening doors to life-extending breakthroughs.
AI TO SPEED UP PENTAGON’S “KILL CHAIN” 🪖
Q: What is an army general’s favorite day?
A: March 4th. 🥁
What’s going on? Leading AI developers like OpenAI and Anthropic are working with the U.S. military to enhance efficiency without crossing ethical lines.
Want the details? The AI systems of OpenAI and Anthropic are aiding the Pentagon in identifying, tracking, and assessing threats—essentially helping commanders act faster within the military’s “kill chain,” a process of identifying and responding to threats. However, these AI tools aren’t replacing humans in life-and-death decisions. Pentagon officials emphasize that humans remain at the center of all critical force employment decisions. For instance, the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and AI Officer, Dr. Radha Plumb stated, “As a matter of both reliability and ethics, we’ll always have humans involved in the decision to employ force, and that includes for our weapon systems.” Generative AI, these officials say, is used for planning and strategizing, not weaponization.
“The position that we should never use AI in defense and intelligence settings doesn’t make sense to me. The position that we should go gangbusters and use it to make anything we want—up to and including doomsday weapons—that’s obviously just as crazy. We’re trying to seek the middle ground, to do things responsibly.”
AI USE IN “THE BRUTALIST” STIRS CONTROVERSY 🍿
I haven’t seen any new movies or shows lately. I’ve had Stranger Things to watch. 🎬
What happened? Brady Corbet’s highly anticipated film The Brutalist has found itself at the center of controversy after editor Dávid Jancsó admitted to using AI tools during production.
Want the details? Speaking to Red Shark News, Jancsó explained that AI software from Respeecher helped refine the Hungarian dialogue spoken by stars Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones. As a native Hungarian speaker, Jancsó highlighted the language’s complexity. While Brody and Jones trained extensively, AI was used to perfect their accents, replacing small elements like individual letters to ensure authenticity. Jancsó also contributed his voice to finesse particularly challenging phrases. Additionally, AI was used in the film’s final sequence to generate architectural visuals aligning with character designs.
Why is this controversial? On one hand, people are excited about the prospects of AI use in film, making editing easier and cheaper. On the other hand, however, critics have argued it undermines artistic integrity, labeling it a shortcut that sidesteps paying human artists. This incident underscores ongoing tensions around AI’s role in cinema.
“We should be having a very open discussion about what tools AI can provide us with. There’s nothing in the film using AI that hasn’t been done before. It just makes the process a lot faster. We use AI to create these tiny little details that we didn’t have the money or the time to shoot.”
