AN AI ORCA HAS SURFACED 🐋

Q: What do you call musical sea-mammals?

A: An orca-stra! 🐬

What’s up? Microsoft, in a partnership with Open AI, revealed a new AI model called Orca.

What is Orca capable of?

  • Orca can be trained using large language models like GPT-4.

  • Orca is designed to overcome the limitations of smaller language models.

  • Orca allows researchers to optimize their models for specific tasks and run them without reliance on a large data center.

WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES “DECISIVE ACTION” 🏛

The White House is finally doing something about AI! … Well, at least they say they are. 🙏

What happened? The White House announced yesterday that they are planning on taking “decisive action” to reduce AI risks in the coming weeks.

How “decisive” will this action be? White House officials are working on securing commitments from leading AI companies to combat challenges from the government and the private sector. The Office of Management and Budget is also drafting a policy which will work with federal agencies to protect the American people’s rights and safety.

What’s the rush? The White House hopes to regulate AI deepfakes and other AI-generated fake news as the 2024 election approaches. Additionally, as AI continues to rapidly develop, its uses remain unchecked and dangerous to the public.

CHINA’S UNDERGROUND CHIP MARKET 🇨🇳

If you dig far enough, you’ll reach China. You also might find some AI chips along the way. 💾

What’s the deal? Amidst U.S. sanctions on AI chips, China has been left creating an exclusive market of their own.

Some background: Last fall, the White House ordered U.S. chipmakers stop exporting AI chips to China and Hong Kong, part of efforts to stunt the growth of Chinese AI development amid trade tensions.

What does the “underground chip market” actually mean? Despite the name, China’s chip market doesn’t actually exist underground, but sales are done outside of the public eye. Selling these AI chips is not illegal in China, but those who possess them remain anonymous and keep quiet about their availability, lest they become a target for violence. Not to mention, Chinese vendors who get their hands on these U.S. chips are charging double the usual price due to their scarcity.

What does this mean for U.S. chip producers? Nvidia, the leading producer of chips used for AI development, is predicting a $400 million drop in sales during this next quarter if the sanctions are not relieved. So much for their groundbreaking chip innovations!
