WHISTLEBLOWERS CALL FOR INVESTIGATION OF OPENAI 👀

Q: Did you hear about the referee that got fired from the NBA?

A: Supposedly he’s a whistleblower. 🏀

What’s new? A group of OpenAI whistleblowers has alerted SEC Chair Gary Gensler, calling for a legal investigation of the company.

What was said? The whistleblowers claim that the company’s non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) threaten employees with punishment for raising concerns to federal authorities, urging the SEC to investigate OpenAI’s severance procedures, non-disparagement, and NDAs. They argue these restrictive policies have “forced employees to waive their rights to whistleblower compensation,” fostering a fearful environment that “jeopardizes the safety and transparency of developing AI technology.” The whistleblowers have requested the SEC to compel OpenAI to disclose all issued NDAs, remind employees of their right to whistleblow, impose fines for improper NDAs, and address the “chilling effect” of past protocols.

“Given the well-documented potential risks posed by the irresponsible deployment of AI, we urge the Commissioners to immediately approve an investigation into OpenAI’s prior NDAs, and to review current efforts apparently being undertaken by the company to ensure full compliance with SEC rules.”

What’s the significance? This letter comes after OpenAI’s employee exit agreements faced scrutiny for threatening to withhold vested equity from ex-employees who refused to sign the exit agreement or violated their NDA. Needless to say, OpenAI drama continues to stir, and the problems on the inside threaten their AI development dominance.

OPENAI’S (NOT SO) NEW PROJECT 🍓

When life gives you lemons, throw them back and demand strawberries! 🍋

What’s going on? OpenAI has changed their Q* project into a project named “Strawberry.”

What is Strawberry? Formerly known as Q*, this initiative aims to enhance the reasoning capabilities of AI models, enabling them to autonomously navigate the internet and conduct “deep research.” According to internal documents and a source familiar with the project, Strawberry’s purpose is to empower AI to plan and solve complex, multi-step problems, a significant leap from current capabilities. Its approach involves a post-training process to fine-tune AI models beyond their initial training.

Why is this significant? OpenAI’s efforts align with broader industry goals to achieve human-like reasoning in AI, a challenge shared by companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft. By teaching AI to “reason,” OpenAI hopes to unlock new AI potentials, from scientific discoveries to advanced software development.

YOUTUBE PROTECTS PEOPLE FROM AI VIDEOS 🎥

Q: What’s a YouTuber’s favorite river?

A: The live stream. 📽️

What’s new? YouTube implemented a significant policy change amid the growing prevalence of AI-generated content.

How does this work? Users can now request the removal of AI content that mimics their face or voice through YouTube’s privacy request process. This policy primarily supports first-party claims, with exceptions for minors, deceased individuals, or those without computer access.

What’s the removal process? If a complaint is lodged, the video will be flagged and the uploader has 48 hours to respond before YouTube steps in. YouTube’s removal decision is not guaranteed, even if the content uses someone’s appearance or voice. The platform will assess factors such as the AI nature of the content, its identification of individuals, and whether it qualifies as satire or parody. Public figures and content depicting sensitive activities, including criminal acts or political endorsements, will be scrutinized carefully, especially during this U.S. election year. Removed content will be fully deleted, stripping all personal information from titles, descriptions, and tags. Further, labeling a video as AI content or making it private doesn’t ensure compliance with these guidelines.
