DIRECTOR OF TITANIC JOINS STABILITY AI 🎬
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. 🤷♂️
What’s up? Famous movie director James Cameron, known for his concerns about AI leaving people without purpose, has now joined Stability AI’s board of directors, marking a major step for both the film and tech industries.
“I’ve spent my career seeking out emerging technologies that push the very boundaries of what’s possible, all in the service of telling incredible stories.”
Want more details? James Cameron has directed popular movies like Terminator, Avatar, and Titanic. He has long been an early adopter of emerging technology and has highlighted the potential of generative AI and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to enhance filmmaking as a key motivation for his decision to join Stability AI. This move comes as Hollywood studios, including Lionsgate and Sony Pictures, have been forming partnerships with AI firms to streamline production costs for films. These partnerships have drawn criticism from actors and writers, contributing to last year’s Hollywood strikes. This has also led to ongoing lawsuits against Stability AI and other AI companies for potential copyright violations. Despite such concerns, Cameron, who has faced backlash for using AI to remaster films like The Abyss and Aliens, remains enthusiastic about AI’s future in entertainment.
INTEL RELEASES NEW AI CHIPS, LOOKS FOR A BREAKTHROUGH 💾
I have some “intel” on the new AI chips. 😆
What are the chips? The Xeon 6 CPU offers improved performance with P-cores, doubling the output of its predecessor, while the Gaudi 3 AI accelerator targets generative AI applications, competing with Nvidia’s H100 and AMD’s MI300X.
Why is this significant? This launch comes as Intel faces increasing pressure, with rumors of a potential takeover by Qualcomm and investment interest from Apollo Global Management. Although the company has underperformed against rival NVIDIA in AI chip production and distribution, the rise of data centers combined with NVIDIA’s limited supply offers hope for a breakthrough.
“Demand for AI is leading to a massive transformation in the data center, and the industry is asking for choice in hardware, software, and developer tools. With our launch of Xeon 6 with P-cores and Gaudi 3 AI accelerators, Intel is enabling an open ecosystem that allows our customers to implement all of their workloads with greater performance, efficiency, and security.”
AI HELPS RESEARCHERS UNCOVER ANCIENT ART 🖌️
My friend was a struggling artist until he decided to work on sculptures. He made over six figures last year! 💰
What’s new? A team of archaeologists from Yamagata University, in collaboration with Université Paris and AI researchers from IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center, have used AI to discover 303 ancient geoglyphs (rock art) in Peru’s Nazca Desert.
Want more details? The Nazca Desert geoglyphs are ancient designs etched into the earth by the Nasca culture between 200 BCE and 700 CE and have long fascinated researchers. However, discovering new geoglyphs has become increasingly difficult due to their fading visibility. But by training an AI model on known geoglyphs, the team was able to identify 303 previously unknown designs, depicting humans, animals, and abstract figures. Human experts confirmed the findings through site visits. This discovery not only sheds light on the ancient Nasca civilization but also opens new possibilities for uncovering more hidden geoglyphs.
