NYT MAKES CONTENT DEAL WITH AMAZON 🤝

ChatGPT’s image generation still can’t get the letters right. 🙃

What happened? The New York Times has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon, allowing the tech giant to use its news content across various AI platforms, including Alexa+.

What are the details? This agreement lets Amazon integrate real-time summaries and excerpts from the NYT, including content from NYT Cooking and The Athletic, into its products and offerings. It also allows Amazon to use this content to train its own AI models. While the financial terms weren’t shared, the partnership signals a collaborative path forward amid rising tensions between media companies and AI developers. Notably, the NYT is still suing Amazon’s competitors, OpenAI and Microsoft, for allegedly using its content without permission.

Why does it matter? This deal shows how major media outlets and tech companies are finding ways to work together in the age of AI. For readers, it could mean easier access to trusted news via tools like Alexa. For the industry, it sets a precedent for licensing content instead of fighting over copyright in court.

META AI SURPASSES A BILLION USERS 🦾

ChatGPT is not the AI you should be worried about … 🙃

What happened? Meta’s AI assistant now has over one billion monthly users across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and the stand-alone Meta AI app.

Want some details? Meta AI is built into the company’s already-popular apps, offering users personalized help with tasks like searching, chatting, and generating content. In April, Meta also released a separate app for the assistant, boosting accessibility and engagement. Going forward, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company will focus on making Meta AI more personal, voice-friendly, and entertaining. As it improves, Zuckerberg said Meta may offer paid features like advanced recommendations or more powerful computing access through subscriptions—similar to services offered by ChatGPT and other AI tools.

Why should you care? While tons of hype surrounds ChatGPT, OpenAI’s jewel boasts only 20% of the monthly users of Meta AI! This milestone signals how Meta AI is quietly growing as one of the most popular AI assistants in the world. The feat also reflects how central AI assistants are becoming in everyday life.

GOOGLE INTRODUCES MEDGEMMA 🩻

Patient: Doctor, I get heartburn every time I eat birthday cake.

Doctor: Next time, take off the candles. 🎂

What’s new? Google DeepMind has launched MedGemma, a suite of its most powerful open-source AI models for understanding medical text and images. It is now accessible on GitHub and Vertex AI.

How does it work? MedGemma is built on Google’s latest AI foundation, Gemma 3, and comes in two versions: a 4-billion parameter model that handles both images and text, and a larger 27-billion parameter model for text-only tasks. It’s designed to help developers create AI tools for healthcare, like analyzing radiology scans, summarizing patient interviews, or supporting clinical decisions. Developers can improve MedGemma’s performance through prompt engineering, fine-tuning, or combining it with other tools in more complex AI systems.

Why should you care? MedGemma gives developers a head start in building medical AI apps that could eventually support doctors, improve patient care, and speed up diagnosis. While it’s not yet ready for clinical use, it sets a strong baseline and puts powerful tools in the hands of innovators aiming to bring AI into healthcare safely and responsibly.
