EX-GOOGLE EMPLOYEE STEALS AI SECRETS FOR CHINA 🥷

My roommates get mad when I steal their kitchen utensils. But that’s a whisk I’m willing to take. 👨‍🍳

What’s going on? Linwei “Leon” Ding, a former Google AI engineer, could spend the rest of his life behind bars after being indicted on 14 federal charges, including economic espionage and trade secrets theft.

Want the details? The U.S. DOJ alleges that Ding stole proprietary information on Google’s AI supercomputer technology to aid Chinese companies and the Chinese government. Court documents reveal that Ding’s role gave him access to sensitive information about Google’s hardware and AI innovations. According to the DOJ, Ding uploaded more than 1,000 confidential Google documents to his personal cloud account between 2022 and 2023. The court states that these documents include trade secrets which “contain detailed information about the architecture and functionality of TPU chips and systems and GPU systems, the software that allowed the chips to communicate and execute tasks, and the software that orchestrated thousands of chips into a supercomputer capable of training and executing cutting-edge AI workloads.” Ding later founded an AI company in China, promoting it as a key player in boosting China’s computing capabilities. If convicted, he faces up to 175 years in prison and fines exceeding $36 million.

IS AI GETTING BETTER AT MATH? 🔢

Have you ever noticed something really odd about math? Every other number! 🙃

What’s up? A year ago, DeepMind’s AlphaGeometry shocked the world by performing at the level of silver medallists in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)—a prestigious competition for top high school mathematicians. Now, its successor, AlphaGeometry2, has outperformed the average gold medallist.

Want the details? The IMO requires the solving of Euclidean geometry problems. These problems require the construction of rigorous proofs, a skill that goes beyond simple number crunching. DeepMind’s latest system combines Google’s advanced Gemini language model with a neuro-symbolic approach, allowing it to reason about shapes and manipulate geometric objects effectively. In tests, AlphaGeometry2 correctly solved 84% of IMO geometry problems from the past 25 years, a major leap from its predecessor’s 54%.

“I imagine it won’t be long before computers are getting full marks on the IMO.”

-Kevin Buzzard, a mathematician at Imperial College London

Why is this significant? Many LLMs struggle with math. Over the weekend, we conducted a deep dive into why AI models tend to struggle in this regard. In the end, we emphasized that tech companies will have to train models specifically for math if they want to see reliable success in the field, due to the nature of machine learning. The AlphaGeometry2 breakthroughs are a perfect example, which provides hope for AI’s mathematical abilities going forward.

GOOGLE EXPANDS AI SUITE FOR NONPROFITS 🦾

Q: Why didn't the Invisible Man support the nonprofit?

A: He just couldn’t see himself doing it. 👻

What’s new? Google is expanding its AI-powered tools for nonprofits, making it easier for organizations to enhance security, streamline operations, and save on technology costs.

Want the details? Through Google Workspace for Nonprofits, organizations now have access to Gemini AI and NotebookLM—two powerful tools designed to boost productivity while maintaining high privacy and compliance standards. These features include AI-powered support in Gmail, Docs, and Sheets, helping nonprofits to streamline operations and save time. These tools can also help organizations meet strict regulations like GDPR and HIPAA. With this expanded suite of tools, nonprofits can now automate routine tasks, generate reports, and optimize donor outreach with AI, freeing up time to focus on their mission.
