ILLINOIS BECOMES FIRST STATE TO BAN AI THERAPY 😳
What’s new? Illinois has enacted a prohibition against AI’s use for therapy.
Want the details? Governor JB Pritzker signed the Wellness and Oversight Resources Act into law, making Illinois the first state to explicitly block licensed behavioral health professionals from relying on AI tools for therapy decisions. Under the Act, therapists cannot use chatbots or other AI systems to interact with clients, generate treatment plans, or detect emotions. The law also adds new confidentiality rules, requiring therapists to keep client records and communications private from AI systems, with fines of up to $10,000 per violation. However, AI is still allowed for administrative support—like scheduling, billing, or drafting non-clinical notes—as long as licensed professionals remain fully responsible for its use.
Why is this significant? AI is rapidly entering the therapy space. AI-powered therapy tools offer 24/7 care for people who struggle to gain access to traditional, human therapy. However, it has raised concerns about safety, ethics, and privacy. Illinois’ move sets a precedent that other states may follow, forcing providers to think carefully about where AI helps—and where it crosses the line.
GRAMMARLY’S NEW FEATURE CAN GRADE ESSAYS ✏️
What’s new? Grammarly has launched a suite of new AI-powered tools designed to help both students and educators tackle common writing challenges.
How does it work? These tools live inside Docs, Grammarly’s new AI-native writing surface, and cover everything from writing support to academic integrity checks. For students, there’s an AI grader that uses course details and public information about an instructor to give tailored feedback and predict grades. Other tools include a proofreader for grammar and clarity, a citation finder that automatically formats sources, a paraphrase agent to adjust tone and style, and a reader reactions tool that anticipates how an audience might respond. Educators also get powerful aids: a plagiarism checker that scans vast databases and an AI detector that scores whether text is likely human- or AI-written.
“Students today need AI that enhances their capabilities without undermining their learning. Grammarly’s new agents fill this gap, acting as real partners that guide students to produce better work while ensuring they develop real skills that will serve them throughout their careers. By teaching students how to work effectively with AI now, we’re preparing them for a workplace where AI literacy will be essential.”
BLIND MAN RETURNS TO WORK, THANKS TO AI GLASSES 👓
What’s new? A man who lost his sight has returned to work, thanks to new AI-powered smart glasses.
Want the details? A few years ago, Andy Evans lost his vision and had to leave his night shift job at a supermarket. Last year, he bought a pair of AI Ray-Ban glasses made by Meta. The glasses have a tiny camera built into the frame and speakers in the arms, allowing Evans to ask questions like what obstacles are in front of him or what’s written on a menu. With this technology, Evans says his quality of life has greatly improved. Thanks to the glasses, he has now been able to return to work, this time at a local charity supporting others with sight loss.
Why is this significant? This story shows how AI can restore independence and open doors for people with disabilities. For Evans, the glasses meant he could rejoin the workforce and enjoy simple freedoms like ordering food on his own. For many others, such tools could transform daily life and expand opportunities once thought lost.
